For the Charizard piece, I went with a dark reddish orange against a dark blue background. The way I do it is rather than go full complementary, for example when I have yellow, rather than go full purple, which you can, I choose a more blueish or a more redish tinted purple. I call it sidestep complementary. Try it for yourself!
