Still growing
Added 2020-03-03 17:49:08 +0000 UTCI don't know if you'd realise, but I tried to do something different with this page. I realised that I usually have a fear of using too much blacks. I tell myself that it won't look good or "manga-y" enough if I put in such rich blacks. That's a problem I face. Like if I start to crosshatch all the time, I start telling myself that I'm that "cross-hatch" guy and I hold myself back from doing new things. Even on the smallest panels, I tell myself that people would be put off by the lack of hatching if I don't keep it up, and I have this internal debate about why I should or shouldn't do something.
Some things as an artist that I want to change in the future
- Less detail where it isn't needed. I spend too much time on unimportant panels hatching and shading things that a reader will just glance over for a second.
- Not be afraid of empty space. Obviously I love to fill up space with background elements, but I have to know when it's actually better to leave the background empty.
- Be braver with contrast. I have this ambition to make my work look indistinguishable from a traditional medium so I avoid thick lines, trying to imitate 0.5mm fineliners and g-pens, but I need to start embracing the digital medium more. It doesn't have to look traditional, it just has to look good.
