A good week for writing, with another chapter pushed out the door. The two most recent chapters are listed as 'draft' because they haven't quite settled yet. A mini "Jonas arc" of three chapters has emerged in book 5, and once the whole arc is written I'll be able to make a final pass and tidy it up, make sure everything's where I want it to be.
On Monday, I finished reading Sally Rooney's Intermezzo which I suspect may prove the best book I've read this year. I can see it not being everybody's cup of tea. Stylistically, some chapters are tough going, one of the character's narrative voice being all fragmented and more than a little backwards-talking, and at times Rooney leans a little too heavily into the Yoda-voice. But it's all just so emotionally rich and complex; I loved it. The final chapters left me feeling emotionally raw, eyes rather embarrassingly beading with tears as I finished the final pages sat at the Market Porter in Burrough Market. A major plotline of the novel is the (delayed) impact of father's death on the two sons, and that resonated very powerfully. In any case, an easy recommend.
Also, a real influence. The second half of the most recent chapter, basically from the moment Cindy takes over through to the end, was in part an experiment in adapting Rooney's style to what I'm writing. I think it worked, maybe?
In any case, onwards! I hope to have the next chapter, concluding this mini Jonas story-arc, completed and published next week, assuming I'm able to maintain the writing pace. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't, unless the current heatwave melts me, which it very well may.
