Magic in Space Ideas
Added 2022-09-07 20:27:22 +0000 UTCHi Folks,
This post is just for you at our highest backing level to have some extra insight & input into our new icon set for the month.
Keith and I have talked over what to do, and while we can't do anything exactly Spelljammer, we can do our own take on a nautilus ship, moth ship, hammerhead ship, etc.
So I've broken things down to three main types/factions:
- Sea organic ships: nautilus, flying fish, hammerhead, squid.
- Insectoid ships: mosquito, scorpion, and moth.
- Bird ships: shrike, eagle.
Most of the icons in the sets will be battlemat related. For example, we'll have tables, chairs, beds, doors, "helms", etc. for each of those factions. But we'll also have various appendages such as wings, beaks, fins, etc. that are designed to be attached to the various ship deck battlemats.
The settlement icons (usually top-down buildings) will this time mostly be top-down ship tokens (as we did last month) for the ships listed above, along with a space dock for each faction. The classic & isometric sets will also have ship tokens for those ships listed above as well as icons for space ports, city on an asteroid, and space station for each of the three factions.
That already adds up to 100 icons.
But we like to do more than the minimum, so is there something we're missing? I do think a space galleon can already be made with icons in prior sets (we did a pirates & ports set a while back, and when we did "space fantasy" about 2 years ago we had good, evil, and organic fantasy space-faring groups). Likewise a living ship can likely be made with the pirates & ports set and a tree icon.
Some ideas:
- A large cannon will let you make a "Bombard" type ship.
- Grappling jaws and maybe a different fin will get us a lamprey.
- New legs would likely be all you need for a spider.
- Flippers are all we'd likely need for a turtle.
- Different wings would let you pull off a wasp
- Or, do we create a 3rd bird type ship to even things out a bit?
At first glance if may look like just adding one icon (spider legs for example) isn't a big deal, but then we'd also want to do the spider ship token in 3 different styles (top-down settlement, and classic & isometric) so it adds up. So we can't likely do them all.
Spelljammer experts, what should we focus on? Any particular ship types? Or other icons instead such as variations of spaceports and colonies and so on?
Thank you!
Joe
