2019-09-18 16:23:04 +0000 UTCIt's a commentary on Woke Brands. Vought took Annie's message and cannibalised it. They used the rhetoric and trappings of Me Too to sell shit. This is brought up earlier in episode 3 with the discussion of her new suit. Starlight is now 'The Activist' (TM). It's similar to the Black Mirror episode 15 Million Credits where the corporation takes Bing's on stage breakdown, incorporates it and uses it to present the illusion of anti-establishment rebellion without actually changing the institution itself. The problem with Vought isn't Deep, it's that the entire institution is rotten and they only act in a decent way when part of that surfaces to the public eye. Annie's issue is that they didn't shelve Deep because what he did was morally reprehensible, they shelved because it was bad PR and he was an embarrassment. They didn't take the substance of what she was saying and recognise their institutionally complicity in his actions and seek to change their corporate practices. They acted out of self-interest, not principle.
