I think the detective was also abused by his father, which is why we saw in the first episodes that he didn't stop his father at the rooftop as he was standing near the ledge. In fact, he even implied it would be better if his father jumped. That would explain why he also turned out to be a "sex addict" with no serious relationships, as people have different ways they cope with abuse. Even if not his father, I think his father knew about it or enabled the abuse or something. If there is a season 2 then they might explore his traumas because it looks like he does have some secrets.
