Skaven Magic Smoke - Plague Monk

Hi fellow Wizards and Necromancers!

In this tutorial we will continue painting the beautiful Plague Monk model from the new Skabikk Plaguepack – I will show you how I’ve painted the Magic Smoke coming from the orb on this miniature. Explanation on layer and glaze consistency is in the end. A PDF version of this tutorial is attached below for your convenience. Let’s get into the tutorial!

1. First, after basecoating the smoke with Titanium White (from AK Interactive) or a 2:1 mix of water and any other white color, we will start glazing towards the orb (from which the smoke is coming from) with Striking Scorpion Green. We will also add it in the deepest recesses.

2. Next, we will add a glaze of Ushabti Bone all over the areas that were not painted with green in the last step.

3. We will follow that with a wet brush of Ushabti Bone. Wet brush technique is basically the same as drybrush but with a damp brush. So, get some Ushabti Bone on a larger brush, dip the tip of it in water, wipe most of the water off on something like your painting table or paper and go back and forth with your brush all over the smoke. Do this, until you achieve a smooth result.

4. Use a 1:1 mix of Striking Scorpion ad Ushabti Bone in glaze consistency and add it in and around the recesses.

5. Add a wet brush coat of a 1:1 mix of Ushabti Bone and Ivory (from AK Interactive) all over the middle and the end of the smoke.

6. Use a glaze of Averland Sunset on the area where the beige color meets the green part of the smoke.

7. Now we will add a more precise highlights with Ushabti Bone in layer consistency on the outer edges of the smoke.

8. We will follow that with a layer consistency highlight with a 1:1 mix of Ushabti and Ivory. Add this only on the very brightest parts.

9. In the final step, we will use layer consistency Ivory to add a few spot highlights on the areas that are supposed to be the very brightest, so add it on the areas that are the furthest from the orb, as smoke gets less and less visible (and in this case bright) as it gets further away from its source.

And here is a collage of the steps for convenience:

Thank you very much for supporting me – it means the world to me! I dream of being able to paint and make tutorials full time, so if you like my Patreon – please tell your friends about it. It would make a massive difference to me and hopefully it will be beneficial for your friends too :)

*Layer consistently = paint mixed in a 1:1 ratio with water.

*Glaze consistently = paint mixed in a 1:3 ratio with water.

Best wishes,

Mamikon
