How to paint Death Guard - 'Eavy Metal Style Part 1

Happy New Year Patrons!
I hope you all have had a great Christmas and are excited for a new year of hobby projects and clearing that pile of potential!

I have finished Part 1 (of 2) on How to paint a Death Guard Space Marine. I hope the video is a good and informative watch. This version will be Patreon only, I might upload a shorter version of some parts later on.

I know it's been a bit quiet here recently. I am planning on releasing some shorter format videos soon. Ones that don't take so long to record and edit. I will continue to do full miniatures when I can however for example this one took around 2 days to film and around 3-4 to edit. I would rather get some quicker content out over the following few months and really make the Patreon more worthwhile.

Some future Patreon content will include:
Genestealer Neophyte,
Helbrecht's Armour,
Custodes,
Stormcast,
Anphiarus's Dante https://www.instagram.com/p/CWtnO_RAy0-/
Golden Demon Projects

Powerswords & Crystal Blades,
Cloaks,
Gemstones,
Skin tones and faces

Basing for display miniatures

and many more ideas floating about at the moment.

A massive thank you to everyone here for your continued support!

Don't forget to join the Discord! There's lots of exciting stuff happening there at the moment and a very awesome hobby community!

Also a great paint recipe section! :)

Also there is some cool merch now available here! https://infernalbrush.bigcartel.com/
(I will be adding some more in the coming weeks and maybe some limited edition things)

How to paint Death Guard - 'Eavy Metal Style Part 1

Comments

Joined for this very video (+more ofc). Thanks so much!

Sebastian

Absolutely brilliant. I've ordered my new Death Guard and the extra paints I need. Can't wait to give this a go. Thank you.

Clive Maloney

Great Video, Thank you! When do you plan on releasing the second part?

Andreas Pegrin

Oh! One thing I would love to see is how the maggots are done on Nurgle gear. Might already be in the part 2 video but those little guys would be awesome. Not sure if the that recipe has been documented anywhere. Thanks so much!

Jon Granville

I will definitely use this guide to paint my whole DG army. Came across you channel while searching for some Black Templar tutorials and had to support your work. ❤️

Jonas Hesse

oke thanks. And only a bit of woodwild thinned is enough right? i tried wildwood which makes it quite dark. I also gave the burnt umber a try. Do you use it straight out of the pot? Or with a bit of liquitex fluid/water? I tried a mix of the liquitex products and it seems to clump up in some spots. Also tried burnt umber on the copper parts (i dont know if it's like agrax earthshade) but i have the same effect on it. Making dirty spots in the recesses

Yveswarhammerpainting

I would probably go with the lighter s75 pure copper as its closer to the Pro Acryl or Hashut Copper however I think both old copper and pure copper could work.

Infernal Brush

Hello Jon. Thank you. Yeah it is just Death Guard Green, the colour on screen could vary a bit due to all sorts of things including your screen calibration etc.

Infernal Brush

Is the copper best done with a bright copper? Like scale 75 pure copper, or is it more like a darker copper, old copper from s75

Yveswarhammerpainting

Is this stock death guard green. Might just be a screen color thing, but the green looks much more saturated than the paint itself looks when dry. Good stuff all the same!

Jon Granville

Just a gloss varnish should do the trick, Vallejo also do one specifically called Metal Varnish.

Infernal Brush

oke thanks! is it better to use something else on metallics?

Yveswarhammerpainting

I don't tend to varnish my miniatures as they aren't for table top generally. However I have used AK Matte and Ultramatte and Mr Top Coat in a can, beware that a matte varnish can kill the metallics though, so perhaps do everything else first.

Infernal Brush

Can i ask what varnish to use? i will play with my model, i always use vallejo matt varnish.

Yveswarhammerpainting

It’s just a product of layering more and more athonian camoshade, but if you’re looking to increase that brown effect, glaze a tiny bit of rhinox hide towards the bottom of areas.

VVenture

Genestealer, yay!:-)

dyniorro

This video on youtube brought me into the fold. You're doing what I've always wanted to see - an insider's perspective on the studio schemes. They're always so strikingly done. One question - it certainly looks like your athonian shade increasingly turns brown over the course of shading - was that just the addition of deathworld, or did you mix anything else in there? You can see the change in tone in the puddle too. Always wondered how that near color shift happens! Thanks a bunch for your work - can't wait to see what else you produce and more than happy to be backing your work!

Jon Granville

Dave great video. Compared to your other tutorials what would you say the difficulty of painting Death Guard like this are? Thanks.

Brett Malone

Just wonderful

Stuart sayer

Hello Mark, well spotted! Yes it is in fact Gurg the foul from the heroes range, my intention is to put the figure on a display base so removing the sculpted base was necessary

Infernal Brush

Hey Yves. We never used Balthasar in the studio, I believe that was what the army painters used as they follow a different recipe that follows the way Citadel promote their paint range to be used. Base then shade then layer then highlight etc. The way the main studio works is a bit different. Having said that theres no reason why you couldnt use it as a replacement for the basecoat instead of the copper and doombull mix. I hope this helps.

Infernal Brush

Hi Dave, am I correct that is a DG marine from the "Heroes" range? If so did you remove the left foot from the base and attach it to the figure?

Mark Hancock

excuse me, but i was also curious about the GW original recipe. Where u mention agrax earthshade. I already based everything in Balthasar gold thats why i'm curious :P

Yveswarhammerpainting

Thanks Christopher! I have plans to do this soon, it's perfect as it wouldn't take too long to do!

Infernal Brush

Bronze Basecoat: AP weapon bronze / Doombull brown 90/10 Shade: Army Painter Strong tone Controlled shade: Khorne red / black 50/50 Smooth out: base mix Blend up: Army Painter Greedy gold / Shining silver 70/30 Highlight: Shining silver This was back then the AP metallics and washes were good. I wouldn't recommend it now which is why I changed the recipe a bit. If you want any of the other recipes there is a google doc here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11ZK82cZGU7QiDEa30sUKFLf30m_UPEpk Kind regards, Dave

Infernal Brush

Thank you Boothdom! Yeah it was looking excellent and great to see your progress, I hope you can return to it one day!

Infernal Brush

Hello Gerard, thanks for joining the Patreon! Yes part 2 will include some of that, there's also some nurglings on him and a bare head so plenty of bits of flesh. This is the official recipe for those parts although I might change it slightly. Basecoat: Cadian fleshtone / Administratum / white 60/15/25 Shade: base mix / Doombull Smooth out: base mix Glaze mutations: Liche purple, Calgar blue, Straken green, etc. Glaze boils: Yriel yellow, Casandora yellow Highlight: base mix + white You can find a lot of the studio recipes here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11ZK82cZGU7QiDEa30sUKFLf30m_UPEpk In case this helps in the meantime. Kind regards, Dave.

Infernal Brush

Thank you Valerio!

Infernal Brush

Thank you mate!

Infernal Brush

Hey Dave this was a brilliant watch, cheers for the upload! Would be really great to see some content on painting robes and cloaks, and specifically flatter cloaks that aren’t as simple as the typical “shade deep creases and highlight raised folds” Thanks again looking forward to future content :)

Christopher Ellis

What was the original recipe for the bronze if i may ask?

Yveswarhammerpainting

Wicked vid Dave, as usual. Tha ks for the continued content. Makes me want to get back to my Black Templar! 😀

Dominic Booth

Hi! thanks for the detailed tutorial. May I ask, part 2 will include fleshy bits like: tentacles, flesh tubes etc..? its hard to find good death guard paint tutorials that include this parts.
