For Halloween I am sharing photos of a model, Mary Celeste, named after the most famous ghost ship in history.
Mary Celeste was a trade ship that left New York harbor century and half ago, and headed across the Atlantic to Genoa, Italy. On board was an experienced captain, a crew of seven, and the captain’s family, his wife and child.
Eight days later a British ship named Dei Gratia came across the Mary Celeste drifting in the middle of the ocean, some 400 miles east of the Azores Islands. There was not a single person on aboard. None of the people aboard the Mary Celeste were ever seen again or heard from.
What was spooky was that there was no damage to the ship, no signs of struggle. All the cargo was still in the hull. There was enough food and water for six months. All the crew’s belongings were still neatly tucked away. The captains log book was sitting on his desk, and there was nothing in the ship’s log to indicate anything had gone wrong. It’s as if the crew just vanished into thin air, and the ship continued to drift across the ocean until it was intercepted by the crew of the Dei Gratia.
To date no one has solved the mystery of what happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste. There have been countless theories, but no real answers.
