I arise from dreams of thee
In the first sweet sleep of night,
When the winds are breathing low,
And the stars are shining bright
– from a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)
Shelly wrote these lines for a guest of his, Sophia Stacey, who visited him in Italy in November of 1819. Sophia liked to sing while strumming a harp, and this poem, along with two others Shelley penned, were presumably songs she could use.
The title of this poem is “Indian Serenade”. Shelley had never been to India, but at that time for Europeans it was an exotic far away land with promises of adventure, fortune and romance.

PHOTO: These images are from a shoot I did with my dear friend Crystal, couple years ago.
I had discovered a box of Indian jewelry in my storage. My late Mom has given them to me decades ago for an Arabian Nights project I was shooting. Crystal was enchanted with the jewelry and with her characteristic enthusiasm decided to don all the pieces. Then she proceeded to dance, letting me know she was part of a powerful Sultan’s harem!
I thought I’d share them on IG today to pick up her spirits.
