Today I sit here and ponder how the fateful events of 20 years ago changed our world forever.
The mujahideen that we had armed and trained to battle the Soviets in Afghanistan came back to visit bite us. Once any government unleashes the dogs of war, it is hard to know how far and how long destruction will reign.
I wonder if things could have been different. The sixties gave us the anti war movement and the folk song writers who are the poets and bards of our generation. If only we listened to them, to their timeless message. Instead our government turned on them.
Peter Seger, who inspired Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and many more, was blacklisted by Senator Joe McCarthy’s Senate sub-committee on un-American Activities.
Today I sit here and hum to myself Seegar’s song, “Turn, turn, turn…”
