Light as air

In the early 2000s I was visiting New York and a friend invited me to a dance performance. She refused to tell me anything in advance, so I could fully appreciate the surprise and wonder of the show.

As we stood whispering and crowded inside a large dark room, the ceiling suddenly burst open (it was made of paper) and dancers attached to wires fell through. What followed was the first aerial dance performance I had the pleasure of seeing, done by an Argentinian troupe called De La Guarda.

I have loved photographing aerials ever since. This is a photo of my dear friend Crystal from one of the first shoots we did. (She is battling cancer now and continues to inspire with her indomitable spirit).
