Filmmaker Lina Esco made a documentary back in 2014 called “Free the Nipple” where she filmed herself running topless through New York.
Her film, and the publicity it generated, kicked off a worldwide phenomenon of women protesting laws banning showing of women’s breasts in public.
According to Esco, it’s not about titillation. "You can pay to see women topless in porn videos and strip clubs, but the moment a woman owns her body, it’s shameful,” said Esco. “Women should be able to do what they want with their bodies.”
A woman artist, who goes by the name Phoenix Freely, was awarded $29,000 from New York City when she was arrested and held in jail for 12 hours for going topless in the streets.
A friend of mine wanted to see if she could raise funds to publish a “Free the Nipple” book. She asked me to photograph some test shoots so she could shop the idea around to some publishers. These photos of Lillie were taken for that project.
