There are two schools of thought when it comes to photography, “discover” versus “create”.

Some photographers thrive on capturing the world as they find it, “discovering” beautiful moments. Brassaï’s night time photos of Paris in the 1920s, and Henri Cartier-Bresson with his street photography and “decisive moment” are early proponents of this.

But other artists treat photography almost like painting, “creating” an image that at first only exists in their imagination.

My travel photographs tend to be in the “discover” camp; though, even there, I am not immune to changing tone and contrast to convey the emotions I was feeling when I took the photograph. Journalist try to record a scene objectively, but I aim for emotional truth.

My studio photography falls very much in the “create” school. The “create” part starts with cool lighting, and then continues long after the shutter has been clicked with what's called post-production.

In the film days I would spend countless hours in the darkroom. But since the 1990s, thanks to two brainy brothers named John and Thomas Knoll who invented a digital darkroom called Photoshop, I do my creating without dipping my fingers in chemicals all night long!

PHOTO: Nicole’s aunt had gifted my Body as Temple calendar to Nicole’s family for several years. At a family gathering that I was invited to Nicole introduced herself and expressed a desire to come shoot with me.

We started with some yoga photos against a white backdrop and then continued to just experiment and play. Nicole has a sweetness to her and turning her into an angel seemed like the thing to do.
