Yeah wild horses is still a thing and we still have wild horses here in some areas of Scandinavia, not in all areas of course, but for example here in Denmark we have an island where there are still wild horses in nature.

Ya'll there are definitely wild horses. Here in the United States I know that there are multiple areas where horses roam freely, like in the mountains or places like Yellowstone. But, I must say that I didn't know this for sure either until we went to visit my in-laws er the Outer Banks in North Carolina and they took us on a "Wild Horse" tour. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Here's a brief description:
On The Northern Outer Banks, legends abound—and some living
legends still roam these remote beaches. The official state horse of North Carolina, the Corolla Wild Horses are descendants of colonial Spanish Mustangs brought by explorers over 400 years ago. Here, these wild horses roam freely and are most commonly found in the four-wheel-drive areas of Corolla and Carova. It is illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of the horses, so that means no petting or feeding, but they can be appreciated from a distance on one of our wild horse tours. We have several tour companies that can get you within picture-taking distance while also giving you a great history lesson about the horses and the area itself.
It was so amazing. At the very end of the Outer Banks, there is a section that you cannot take a car past, so it's only like 4 wheelers, and there are houses there. It is illegal like it said to get close to the horses, although they probably wouldn't let you anyway. The horses are protected and the houses in this area are not allowed to have closed fences, meaning they can have a fence, but they cannot have like a gate that closes and horses are allowed to go wherever they want even in your yard, on your porch, wherever. When we were on our tour, horses are just walking in the road and you have to wait for them to move. They can't honk at them or scare them to try and get them to move, it's very regulated to allow the horses that have been there for hundreds of years to remain there and be protected. The guide we had was very knowledgeable and it was one of the best experiences of my life. We were very close to the horses and took lots of pictures, but again not close enough to pet, plus you're not allowed even if you are close enough.
I don't remember this story perfectly, but there was something like, if a horse gets injured somehow or sick and they have to take the horse away from this area, they can't ever take them because they would have been exposed to things the other horses have never been exposed to - it's sad but it's to protect the horses. I'm pretty sure there are rescues for those horses that can't go back.
It's so beautiful to see the horses running on the beach, walking on thh beach. It's just really amazing.
