RISE OF BANGTAN | Chapter 04: Reflection

RISE OF BANGTAN | Chapter 04: Reflection

what made bts stand out or at the time get labeled as 'controversial' in Korea is that their company did not dictate their musical direction and allowed them to write and produce their own music which was not common in the kpop industry and for that reason, you will find that bts have songs about every single social topic under the sun... even feet kinks lmao. the rawness is what draws people in. Bang Sihyuk, their boss, already said in the previous episode that he never controlled their music at all because he wanted them to write their stories.

What these guys went through in the early days is incredibly heartbreaking. I'm sure those experiences bonded them together solidly because they truly only had each other since other idol groups were not comparable to them. Most things about BigHit were different. They did have a lot of rules as you heard the guys talk about, but you will also hear them talk about not having the same rules as the big 3 companies, so there was definitely a difference. One very stark difference as you saw was that Bang PD wanted them to write their own lyrics and stories from the beginning. He saw their raw talent, but he knew that they would build that strong relationship with their fans if they were authentic. Yes, I'm sure they had a lot of help and you will hear them talk about their latest song being turned down or not chosen by the producers, so there's definitely still decisions being made by other people especially in the beginning, but the stories told were stilll from BTS. You will often hear them talk about song concepts, so even when they may use a writer for their songs, they are still working with that writer so that the song says what they want it to say. I do believe that when RM was talking about not being able to work with his friends on their project it was more about timing and responsibilities to an agency, like being signed probably limited them to be able to work on outside projects and that would not allow them to work with those underground rappers. I believe that BTS is so successful now that their contracts have changed dramatically and they have A LOT more say in their lives and music. I believe that their latest contract negotiations probably negotiated more individual time so that they could work on those outside projects, which in my opinion is good because i think it will help allow them to stay together as a group because they will also be able to pursue their individual desires as well. I'm speculating this, but I just imagine that if they signed another contract, I think they are at a place to definitely demand anything and then find compromises with the company, and obviously they did. Ten years is actually a long career for K-pop. Only a small number of groups last that long. And when you hear BTS talk about their company - that they built by the way - you hear them strive to have a different culture at HYBE and I believe they do, just from hearing how other idols talk about their companies and how you hear people who work at HYBE talk about HYBE - obviously you have outliers, but in general they seem to really desire to create a better working atmosphere than what we know of the K-pop industry. You can hear SUGA talk about this on his talk show Suchwita with the other members as well as other idol group members - you should really start checking this show out, it's SOOOOOOOO GOOD and they did a lot of explaining about their desire not to make idol groups after them have to experience what they went through - so you can see how strongly that era impacted them, because most groups that are their juniors will always talk about how kind and generous and helpful BTS is to them. And you should check out Snooze by Agust D because he wrote that song for his junior idols and it's written from the heart. It's a masterpiece.
