Chapter 452

“How did you know they would be able to learn how to use their mana?” Xavier asked Ajax as they approached the capital.

While almost all beastkin could learn to use their mana, getting the skill was a different matter. That both of the slaves Ajax bought had managed to gain [Sense Mana] in a week under his and Lexi’s guidance was something very important to question.

“Desperation.” Ajax explained. “You most often gain skills when you are under pressure. I am sure both of them must have been pushed so close to death from their bad living conditions that they instinctively used mana. A little dedicated effort to use it consciously was all it took.”

Ajax was very happy with his investment into new retainers. While both of the slaves still looked at him and Lexi with wariness after a week they stopped flinching whenever they raised their hand while in striking distance.

“I’m more interested in that eye the little gal’s got.” one of their guards said as he looked towards the painfully thin beastkin that was still wearing her collar. “I know about [Heat Vision], quite a few monsters with it but this is the first time I met a person with it and they can explain what they see with it.”

Ajax himself was also very interested in [Heat Vision]. Initially he had hope she had the ability to shoot lasers from her eyes but he realized the absurdity and wasn’t disappointed. “Wish I could take those collars off them.” Ajax said, he wanted to start working on building trust and in his eyes those collars were the first wall he would have to knock down.

“Those collars are important for their protection.” Oliver repeated himself, he had made the same observation a couple of times since the slaves had joined the convoy. “As long as they belong to someone much fewer people would dare do anything when they are in town.”

Ajax’s next idea to build trust was to have the slaves join them for their meals. That also backfired however as the two children wouldn’t touch any of the food before they were expressly told they could eat. After they were told they could eat, Ajax saw them practically inhale the food, almost certainly afraid someone would take it from them if it wasn’t gone as soon as possible.

“It’ll take time.” Lexi reassured him. “Some things just take time.”

Lexi herself had grown a little attached to the two slaves as she saw them as her own students after helping them learn [Sense Mana]. Something she surprised herself with as she hadn’t expected to enjoy teaching as much as she had. She very much planned to help train House Hearthbound’s retainers in the future.

“At least there is no welcoming gala.” Ajax said as the convoy entered the capital. The whole place looked very much the same as it did five years ago.

“They don’t want their nobles to get comfortable around you.” The prince said with his trademark smirk. “There will be a party you can’t skip out on after you exit the dungeon.”

“Why wouldn’t they want people to get comfortable around me?” Ajax asked. “Not that I’m complaining.”

“Because of Kate.” The prince answered. “That someone of your status has a beastkin as a sister-in-law is outrageous to them.”

The prince had been purposefully loud enough that both slaves heard him and their wide eyes locked onto Ajax. They couldn’t believe what they had just heard, they quickly looked at each other thinking they must have heard wrong only to be met by the same incredulous gaze.

“You really should name them something else.” Xavier whispered.

Neither of the slaves’s former owners had that many slaves to look after so the two of them had been named with a placeholder names, Snake and Monkey. Their new masters were supposed to provide them with new names after they purchased them.

“I’ll have them choose their own names once we cross back into Gryndor and I remove the collars.” Ajax whispered back as they arrived at their accommodations. The same mansion that housed them during their previous visit to the Empire, though their ambassador had changed in the past five years.

Ajax, Lexi, Anna, Xavier and Oliver all went to bed relatively quickly. All of them wanted to prepare for their delve tomorrow. While none of them would be pushing their limits as they had done in previous delves they wanted to be at their best. The lack of safety due to not having anyone boosting them meant they always needed to be on guard during the delve.

Once he was sure that all of them had settled in and a squad had set up their surveillance, the eldest prince of Gryndor took one squad and headed for the imperial palace. Unlike their previous delves he didn’t need to stick so close to his charges this time around, not only that but he other duties on this trip besides the safety of the new generation.

“Took you long enough to get here.” Zilfallon provoked the prince as soon as he arrived at the palace.

The prince took a moment to examine Zilfallon, instead of responding to his words or offering a greeting he showed his trademark smirk before answering the provocation with a simple backhanded compliment. “You’ve closed the gap some. But you’re still not ready.”

The prince’s words had the desired effect as Zilfallon clenched his teeth. “Enough of this.” Solderon tsked in annoyance. “You said you have a message for father, come deliver it and you two can play your childish games after.”

“Lead on.” The prince regained his serious expression as he and the ten man squad of elite warriors was led into the palace.

The small throne room they were led to was similar to the one the king of Gryndor used for important meetings. It was also pretty packed. Besides the immediate imperial family, there were at least forty other people there, only a little over half of them being guards there for the protection of the emperor.

“Welcome, boy.” The emperor greeted the prince with a wide smile and open arms. “I haven’t seen you since the war.”

“My father thinks you’re a bad influence on me.” the prince responded.

Back during the latest war the Empire had allied with Gryndor. The prince had met with the emperor frequently during that campaign. The emperor had been pushing for a royal marriage between the empire and Gryndor to build a stronger bond between the two nations. An idea that hadn’t been without merit before Shadow’s rise to prominence and the forced peace that followed.

“And yet here you are.” the emperor’s smile widened.

“My father sent me with a sensitive piece of information.” the prince responded as he made a show of taking in everyone present. “One not even my guards know about yet.”

The emperor’s face turned stoic as he took a moment to come to a decision. “Leave us.” The command sent everyone but the guards, the empress as well as their sons and grandchildren out of the room. “Go on then, what’s so important.”

“It’s about expansion into the Wild Lands.” His words instantly provoked a gasp from Sandor. “We have a very likely theory on how to expand safely into the Wild Lands.”

Everyone present knew that expansion into the Wild Lands will become very important in the near future to accommodate the increase in population.

“A theory?” Solderon sounded outraged at the waste of time. “Why not test it out then come here and share if it is important.”

“I’m sorry to have wasted your time.” the prince quickly answered. “Anything concrete will most likely take a while to verify but we will let you know as soon as we do. After all only a fool would rush anything to do with the ascended races.”

The room became so quiet even someone with a Perception of five could hear a pin drop. “You’ve gained insight into the ascended races?” the emperor sat forward on his throne as he asked.

The prince provided a quick explanation of what the agreement made between the ascended races regarding humanoids was, he didn’t share any of their sources however. “I would like to request access to any of your records that connect to this matter.”

“Ha, I thought you were lying at first.” Zilfallon laughed, drawing piercing glares from the squad there to protect the prince. “You’re only sharing this with us because if we poke the sleeping dragon it might not bother to check before it wipes you out as well.”

“What my son means to say is thank you.” the emperor said. “I’ll make sure to share anything we find that is relevant. Have you shared your theory with any other nation?”

While the question sounded innocent enough the real intent was clear as day to everyone ‘can we use this to provoke another nation into self-destruction’.

“Not yet.” the prince said.

“You’ve given me quite a lot to think about,” the emperor said. “Not in the least being how you came upon this theory. Do have a good evening, I look forward to seeing you again in a couple of days.”

As they prepared to take their leave the prince turned back, his trademark grin causing Zilfallon and Solderon to brace themselves. “Oh, before I forget. I highly recommend increasing the guard around your dungeon for a short while.” the prince’s gaze becoming more predatory with every word. “Something to handle a level on hundred and twenty floor break at the very least.”

Concrete as a word is actually much older than it's current use to describe a building material. Prior to that, it was used the same way here, as a way to describe things as real/tangible/actual

Zack

Still think there's as reason he couldn't earn a bond from before. His soul has been marked. They (the Dragons) are watching him. He just has to prove himself, which he can't do with all this boosted babysitting!

I remember in one of the last chapters for the elven delves they mentioned being gone a year which felt odd and right. Odd because in previous chapters talking about the different seasons and what they are like, super cold Grimm season, we saw none of that or mentions of birthdays being celebrated from leaving Gryndor to returning. It felt right in the description of time it took to get from one dungeon to the next based off of previous talks of travel.

I've made this argument several times in the past as well. It's best to think of it as everything being said is being filtered through Ajax's interpretation. It's not like any of them are speaking english. What was said was probably some other idiom that was reinterpreted as such by Ajax.

Read Isekai

There may be something else he's going to tell them before they leave?

Read Isekai

Lets put it this way... the deal for the second empire delve was for it to happen in 6 years after the first, there was a 5 year time skip after he got back from the empire(the first time) that ended just as they were heading to the republic for the tournament. Therefore they've been gone for around a year Chapter 348 says they were in the republic for half a year, the original plan was to spend most of the rest of the year in Sylvanthat before having a month to relax in Gryndor before going the empire, but because he got the Deepwood delves he had to cram all those dungeon runs into the original time so he would have enough time to make it to the empire

Read Isekai

I could have sworn the travel to Empire > Republic > 2 Elves nation and now back to the Empire was 5 years. just travelling between each and not account for time spent for stuff like tournament and parties was months in between. I will have to go back to re-read

Add on thought, it would be interesting thing if in the long term plan by Ajax for Lessis is to be more like the Republic with multiple races (which i think is heavily implied in story). This would mean even if Humans dont get Mana inject or even mana expulsion then Duke Hearthbound would still be able to recruit people from like the beastkin Kids who have some skills and maybe interested in the stuff like farming or garden / greenhouse). I guess he already has the agreement with the elves for trainers to come to Lessis (and they would most likely keep an embassy or a presence there to go with Ajax on his "Guided" Delves in the dungeon for more manure and stuff. And with maybe some Dwarves from Republic would be interested to move down to work with him because of the way he could degrade their armor and finally the beastkin in would be recruited locally or from Republic (i am think of the one who fought him in the tournament). Basically IF i am reading the implication it actually will be interesting to see the changes in the City and surrounding areas

Ajax has been away from gryndor for less than a year, maybe about a year when you include this trip to the empire. There was a 5 year time skip from chapter 297-299 however he was in Gryndor the all of that period

Read Isekai

Hello, Random question. While Ajax has been doing his tour of the dungeons (which is over 5 years in story time, i did not realize) who has been injecting mana into his farm (or mana expulsion in area if they dont have inject) ?? So far in story i think only Ajax was said to have the skill and ability. Is the assumption that he trained some farmers or his bee keepers so that they are capable and are doing the job ?? Also as mana expulsion is i think uncommon (injection i think was rare so may not have been aquired by others) so there should be people who can get this at some point, maybe because they (farmers / bee keepers) are dealing with mana plants / Bees now. Also i assume he will still keep his land around the capital even though his family will be moving back to Lessis (assume they leave a manager for the estates and the business, like the mana farms and bee keepers). It would be interesting to know if Ajax plans to "import" some bee hives to Lessis too or if there are bees maybe start it up. I guess he can use the manure instead of the mana injections going forward BUT it has been 5 years so far so just got curious. anyways just a random thought when I realized the time spent travelling.

“Anything concrete will most likely take a while to verify..." Didn't he only invent cement a few weeks ago? So they shouldn't be using "concrete" as an expression quite yet.

Rande Knight

I thought the prince said he would tell the Emperor before they left, kind of a way to guarantee safety a bit longer.

Forget the Silvertounge Smith think about Ajax's own father. While he might not be as good a Smith now with an apprentice like her think of how far they can go.

Lawrence West

🤔. Unless the matchup is staggeringly good, he's not going to make it. Teej is right about that.

Ajax is a human though, so it's probably fine for them to admit that he's exceptional? We'll have to see though!

Read Isekai

Probably laugh it off. Their institutional pride won't let them admit that much of a difference in talent and ability. 🙄

I'm totally getting a Death March vibe from the default names for Ajax's new slaves lol. I wonder if he's going to teach them his casting style? I wonder how the empires going to react to that last comment on a level 120 dungeon break? Maybe they'll let the prince go with him? 🤔

Read Isekai

Unless he has a breakthrough or gets a mythic skill finallyb that let's him beat alv140 floor

I can’t wait for when Ajax heads out to find a bond and happens to meet with an ascended race…or perhaps gets one as a bond 😏 that arc can’t come soon enough

Richard Brown

I've though about the species skill that can only be leraned by the snake girl. I think we do know about a skill that only human can have, wonder if people think of the same as mine.

atome 4 000

Ah. Damn it, you're right! He's gonna have a significant problem with the level 120 guards surrounding the level 120 mini boss, so he can't make it to 140. 🤔

userunfriendly

No I doubt he would try going to lvl 140 given the risks of being alone. Yes he can solo the bosses at that level but he can’t take out the groups of enemies around the boss by himself.

Teej

Please, PLEASE don't go there. Beastkin serving coffee and an assassin?! There are too many Japanese light novels featuring Beastkin assassins in maid outfits. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

userunfriendly

It can be both. Heck she would be perfect at serving coffee. Plus she could be this universes version of the predator and a great blacksmith.

Bob Bryan

Respectfully disagree. I'm sure other, easier skills for assassins, like Low Light Amplification exists. Which does almost the same thing, but better, since you can see ambient temperature objects. 🤓 Thermal vision is too unique and useful for crafting for her to waste it becoming an assassin.

userunfriendly

Yes! He's going to be able to reassure the kids immediately as soon as they see him as a senior retainer, ordering HUMANS around. Something completely impossible in the Empire. 👍

userunfriendly

Don't forget the bull/minotaur beastkin who is his top retainer as well.

Bob Bryan

It’s funny how different minds work. My first thought when I heard heatvision was that she’s the perfect choice for an assassin- since she can spot people through walls, avoid guards with ease and might have some affinity for poison due to her snake side. Smithing was put unter miscellaneous by my brain. Now I hope she gets to do both :-)

Jana

TFTC! 🤔 Those two kids have been mistreated all their lives. What they need isn't just cuddling by Lexi, but PROOF Ajax wasn't lying. Once they're at Hearthbound and see that Kate is Lady Kate Hearthbound, they'll open up more. Of course, since the people of this world aren't aware of the existence of low frequency electromagnetic phenomena, the existence of infra red, (heat) is going to be amazing to them. She could become an incredible forge master. In our world, we use sophisticated instruments to measure the temperature of objects in steel mills. She can SEE it, and it's an incredible advantage. I can see the Silvertongue Forge Master trying to gather her in as an apprentice... I have to admit that the logic is sound on informing the Empire. Now I'm betting like Gryndor, in their oldest records will be hints at the treaty. There's no way such vital information would be completely lost....right? 🥺 (oh crap...let's hope the Empire believes Gryndor...or when provoked, the Dragons and other Ascended races will only destroy the Empire.) 🙄🙄. That's hilarious, though...the Prince offhandedly admitted Ajax can reach floor 120. And to vent his spleen, Ajax is going to trigger a Dungeon Break. Which is DISINFORMATION! Ajax can reach 140 by himself if he's gonna escape by himself immediately after! There's no way the Empire is going to believe a level 54 can reach floor 140, so causing a little trouble to the Empire and fooling the imperial family is just evil! 😈
