As Adam Crouse noted, this series is based on (maybe "inspired by" would be more accurate) the works of Edgar Allan Poe, with each episode taking its title from a Poe short story (I *think* they're all short stories) and using the original tales as the jumping-off point for some highly original takes that also tie in (beautifully, in my opinion) with the overarching series storyline. I don't want to mention any spoilers, but I'll just remind you that Carla Gugino's character said her name was "Verna" in the initial flashback scene in the New Year's Eve bar. "Verna" is an anagram of "raven." Her importance to the story is why there is so much crow/raven symbolism.
