This movie got me into found-footage which is easily my favorite genre of horror. If you can scare people using just handheld cameras or even just your phone, then you can really make a scary movie. Oren Peli made Paranormal Activity for $11,000 and that movie scared the ever-living bajesus out of me!

2023-08-15 21:49:48 +0000 UTCI live in Maryland, and yes, there is a Witch here. And for 20 years, she had my last name, but that's an entirely different horror story. For some reason, this movie never scared me, as it did a lot of people. The movie was filmed on location in only eight days, concluding on Halloween of 1997. Though the story is set in the village of Burkittsville in Frederick County, most of the film was shot in the woods of Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg. Some scenes were also filmed in Wheaton, about 80 minutes from me. Now, if this were actually based on a true story, I would love it, and I would be camping out in those woods; I love stuff like that. Like The Exorcist, I live about 15 min from Cottage City, Maryland, and my grandfather knew and worked with Ronald Hunkeler, aka Roland Doe, at Nasa. Mr. Hunkeler was supposedly possessed at 14 and inspired the book and movie, The Exorcist.

The last 5-10 minutes stayed with me forever. Although now I can watch it without getting scared, it still brings me back to when it was first released. It goes to show the impact this movie had on people when they can recall exactly where they were when they first watched it.

2023-08-15 19:30:19 +0000 UTCProbably the first of the real found footage flicks besides maybe The Last Broadcast and maybe cannibal holocaust if you count that though those are more documentary feeling...different time, they really played the it's legit angle, I remember there was a companion piece called curse of the blair witch (which I honestly remember finding creepier than the film itself) that was like a proper documentary released right before this came out with actual family members for interviewsand such, the actors agreed not to be seen for some while after the release, missing posters were spread out, the internet page had updates on the police investigation and photos of the crime scenes like the abandoned car and the like,, about 90% is improv, they had early gps trackers but the directors would just follow and occasionallyleave direction for the actors and just make them uncomfortable as hell, tgey look filthy and exhausted and a little nuts because they kind of actually were...it feels really genuine because outside the backstory the rest was actually happening...it recieved a lot of flack as time went on but I remember seeing it and the atmosphere at the time and it was just great Pound for pound probably the most successful film of all time, had a budget of something like 200 thousand or some tiny amount and made something like 250 million dollars, for every dollar spent they made something like 1200 back. Case of just the right idea at the right time with the right marketing, there have been good found footage films since but this is kind of the OG

2023-08-15 15:53:26 +0000 UTCAnd finally, the answer to what had me to terrified while I was trying to sleep. It was summer at the time, and I had a window fan. I found out after waking up for the day that the fan had been turning on and off briefly as the power was hiccuping. I had heard the noises again in the daylight, and traced them to my fan. I could see the blades start to move, then stop, start then stop, etc. The power came back a little later, and all was well. I felt quite silly at the time, and I kind of glad that I was alone, LOL! I sure hope you had someone with you off camera for this one!

2023-08-15 15:33:14 +0000 UTCFurthermore, I can explain why I felt like that. This movie was marketed as being found footage, and the actors were widely unknown at the time. The production did a very good job of keeping itself under wraps, and most of us at the time thought that it was actually possible that it was found footage. Most thought that it was going to be something about some kids disappearing, and their video camera had been found, and I was not expecting what happened in the movie. That is why I was spooked after the movie that we went to at night, and then came home alone. Also, I kind of lived in the boonies with no close neighbors at the time.

2023-08-15 15:29:51 +0000 UTCI watched this for the first time in the theater with a group of my friends. It was a bunch of couples, and everyone got to go home with someone. Except for me. My girlfriend at the time had to be somewhere early in the morning, so she went home. I was home alone for the night. I was spooked, and stayed up for a while to watch a nice happy movie. I eventually fell asleep, but awoke at some point to the power being out. I started hearing a strange buzzing sound that that would only go on for a second, stop, then happen again. This happened several times. I was laying in bed petrified. I can't really explain the terror I was feeling at the time. I have never even come close to being that scared since. I don't know how long I lay awake, but I eventually did fall asleep again.
