2023-07-22 21:27:13 +0000 UTCYes Symon good call on the Hammer horrors. There was a lot of talk in the last livestream about Dracula and vampire movies in general. Talk about Lugosi, Nosferatu, etc.. but no one brought up the Hammer ones and I'm kind of kicking myself now for not doing so. You can't go wrong with them as they have a fantastic Gothic atmosphere. To me atmosphere is far and away the most important quality in a horror movie, more than a good villain, gore, even a good plot, etc...

Of course, pre-Code horror isn't as scary as today's horror, but we are talking about close to 100 years ago. Still, movies like Frederic March's Oscar-winning performance of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) and Frankenstein (1931) did disturb many people back then.

2023-07-19 20:25:43 +0000 UTCSo glad to see someone mention "The Haunting" and "The Changeling", two of my all-time favorite haunted house films which I've mentioned to Kat a few times (I think she'd love the Netflix series "The Haunting of Hill House" too, a fantastic new take on that novel/film). "The Others" with Nicole Kidman is another great one and they just announced it's being released as a Criterion Collection DVD next month so I can't wait to get it. Those three films are my trifecta for the haunted house genre.

And. This is a movie from Hammer studios and you probably have never heard of them because a) you are not as old as me and b) you are not British. Hammer studios were SUPER-FAMOUS in the 1950's, 60's and 70's for making big Gothic horror movies full of blood and style and PANACHE. They typically starred Christopher Lee (Saruman from Lord of the Rings) and Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars). They are REALLY important in horror movie history although you'd probably find their movies a little tame now. All the same I just LOVE them. If you get a chance then plllllllease try their "Horror of Dracula" from 1958. It is SO incredibly British that you must BY LAW eat a cream scone and drink a pot of tea while watching it. Hammer kind of fell out of favour in the 80's so this adaptation of Woman in Black was their attempt at a comeback. Which has sadly sort of fizzled now.

The Changeling, The Haunting, The Innocents, The Legend of Hell House, Dark Water, A Tale of Two Sisters ... I love a good haunted house movie. :) Unfortunately I live in a house, so noises are now my enemy. and shadows. Wha -!
