[HELP ME] Calling All LotR People...

I've seen the original trilogy but I don't FULLY remember it/never read the books.

If I animate "Sauron But It's Donald Trump", would it make sense to animate the mouth of Sauron making the speech to an orc army?

The audio I'll be animating:

Thanks all!

I would maybe consider using Sauron's appearance at the beginning of the film, where he is all covered in spikey black armor. Maybe add the trump wig to the top of his spikey crown. It's not lore-correct (he didn't have a corporeal body during the Third Age) but it's funny that way.

Kevin Forbes

Sauron has his own body that we see in the intro sequence of the first movie In the armor: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3a/Sauron.jpg As "Annatar" who helped make the rings: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/28/Annatar%2C_Lord_of_Gifts.jpg/468px-Annatar%2C_Lord_of_Gifts.jpg Most people know the great eye, because that's what's most visible in the movies but he was hanging out in Mirkwood as "the Necromancer" just prior to the rings trilogy. He is a Maiar, like Gandalf. He has a body. "The Mouth" was just his most extremely devoted servant, probably a man, who often spoke for him, but was still his own person Using The Mouth instead of Sauron would be like drawing Rudy Giuliani instead of Trump

RambleJambles

I think it could be your normal style of art, but it's just DT in place of that eye talking like he's suspended between the two spikes.

NativeRunner

When Donald Ttump speaks, you don't watch the mouth. You watch the hands doing the harmonica thing.

G. Smith

this is my favorite, make the pupil purse like trumps cat butthole mouth does

Shel B Kennas 1st fav sprite girl! Congrats to Jake on his first article publish, love a good Jake Take.

I have no frame of reference for this but I asked people who did! Friend 1: "honestly I feel it would make the most sense to have it be humans (eastlanders?) in the book canon. but orks or uruk for like, modern understanding" Friend 2: "I mean, neither the tower nor the guy in armor have visible mouths, and animating mouths is hard, so you have every reason to not give him a mouth" F1: "just do the eye, or the armor with no mouth, or the mouth but hella grody" F3: "Like if they want to use the Mouth of Sauron I'd say style it as being someone else-- a vocal supporter of Trump's, not Trump himself." F2: "Lollll Trump as the tower and and Vance as the Mouth dude would be funny as hell" Hope this helps! πŸ˜…πŸ˜†

It would make sense, but I think it may be funnier if the eye itself has a little mouth, or he speaks through the pupil of the flaming eye.

I think the problem with using the Mouth of Sauron is that he has no eyes. lol. You could use the form of Sauron with the black helmet (from the Prologue of the first movie). But I think the Eye itself is funnier.

I think some people in the comments are talking about Sauron's literal mouth (never seen in the movies or described in the books, so you could represent it however you wanted) and others are talking about the character the Mouth of Sauron (basically Sauron's spokesghoul in the books, who I think might only appears in the extended edition versions of the movies). I think either makes sense! Maybe Brennan Lee Mulligan takes on the role of the Mouth while Sauron's eye keeps watch over everything. The connection to Trump makes me think of John Barron, which is the name that Donald Trump used to use when pretending to be his own spokesman when talking to the press. This is not relevant or anything, just one of those things about Trump that I occasionally remember and think, "Oh, right, THAT weird thing."

Jacob Haller

But I will say the eye of Sauron with a trump wig works! You could use the prongs of the tower the eye sits it for the gesticulating hands and just bend them about to point and gesture like Brennan does. But if you want to capture the essence of that clip the eye is the way to go.

I’d say no to the mouth cause in the moves we never see him talk cause he’s basically a trapped spirit. You mostly feel him looking at you. Cause he’s some giant eye. It’s the most physical he can return to. Possibly use him in the armor when he could use it and make the helmet talk.

Jessiye Davis

I think it should be the Eye of Sauron itself! You should review the Robot Chicken sketch where Sauron loses its contact lens, the eye could pulse to indicate speech etc and I agree with the others with the trump hair on top it would be hysterical

Rocinante

Just echoing the other folk who mentioned that the Mouth of Sauron was only ever in the extended DVDs, and while those are now streamable might not have been seen by as many folks. Personally, when I watched the prompt I was imagining the eye with a big hair piece. Since the eye is a slit, kinda like a cat eye, I was imagining it flexing wide and narrow with each word kind of like a sideways mouth.

Jon

Thematically it definitely makes sense. My only worry would be that the Mouth of Sauron is only in the extended versions of the movies. So for anybody who hasn’t seen those, they may not know why big mouth man is talking and not the eye. But that might not be worth worrying about, as I’m sure the people who’d appreciate the joke the most would have seen the extended editions.

Ben Thompson

I would definitely say putting the Mouth of Sauron behind a podium or something and having the iconic eye either in the background or cutting between shots would get the point across

Dean Evinger Jr

Yes to your question and everything else said above. πŸ˜…

Naughty Shepherd

Sure, yeah - I am not the expert here, you definitely are πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

Locane

Oh for sure but two eyes are a lot easier to make expressive than one eye. It's definitely possible, but having a full person to animate would be a lot more "clear"

DeepBlueInk

I'm imagining it cutting away to some scene of something and then back to the eye, displeased or shocked or worried or smug

Locane

Also, just my personal opinion, eyes are super expressive - sauron's eye pulsing rapidly, enunciating each syllable with a slight growth and shrink, showing emotion with a subtle flaming eyebrow, would 100% work great IMO; and since the eye is iconic from the movies I think more people would grok that right away

Locane

Just to clarify, you understand people saying "The Mouth of Sauron" are referring to this scary lookin' dude right? https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Mouth_of_Sauron

Locane

Just reuse the deep one. Close enough.

cobbal

Amen! Get thee some caffeine!

So I asked my wife and she says that Sauron's body was defeated during the War of the Ring and so his soul or spirit lives on in the iconic flaming eye. This eye doesn't really speak, but it kind of pulses occasionally when it focuses on someone. Maybe that could be a part of it? Alternatively, before this War of the Ring, he did have a body as can also be seen in the Rings of Power series. But in our opinions, the eye is more iconic and recognizable as Sauron than the way he is portrayed in the (not extremely well-received) TV series. The eye pulsing and using those pulses to make gestures could fit well behind like a podium with a teleprompter and everything, we think.

Tobi042

OH no I see it, my bad, 9am's still too early for me

DeepBlueInk

Oh no.. it's just a really bad orc pun, sorry πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

Cian

I don't know what that is yet so you might not be looking forward to much πŸ˜…

DeepBlueInk

Looking forward to the orcward refs! πŸ˜†

Cian

Yep, sounds good to me :)

Valentine

You could also do the armor from the flashback of Isildur getting the ring. Honestly, either would work.

Abaigael Callahan

Yeah, Sauron never speaks, but the mouth of Sauron speaks for him. Totally tracks. πŸ‘

William Hazelden

I'm sure whatever you come up with will be awesome. Excited to see it!

Matthew Grainger

Ooh nice, yeah it's good know there's lots of options if I need them haha

DeepBlueInk

I totally get that. There are also some great fan-art representations of him in his Maiar form, that would make sense when addressing his followers (no need to be fully armored). Here's a fairly accurate representation from trollvindart: https://www.deviantart.com/trollvindart/art/Sauron-in-Maiar-form-872319703

Matthew Grainger

I think it would work. You could also cut between the mouth and Sauron but just the mouth would be sick (in the books Sauron wasn't a flaming eyeball)

Pistols O'Brien

Yeah I think just animating the eye (or a guy in the eye) might be hard to make expressive? Would look cool, but maybe a bit same-y for 90 seconds I think

DeepBlueInk

We truthfully don't see much of Sauron's corporeal form in LotR, but I think a fiery version of one of your character designs in the Eye of Barad-dΓ»r wouldn't be unreasonable. We see a fiery silhouette of Sauron at least once in the movies.

Matthew Grainger

Ah sick thank you and thank you Ronnie's wife!

DeepBlueInk

I am not a LOTR person, but I am married to one! The wife says YES, it would make sense!

Ronnie Hulen

Animate him like Lego Sauron from Lego Dimensions /j

procrastinatingDestiny

Yes it absolutely would!
