Monster Templates

What happens when an orc turns into a werewolf? How do you modify its stat block? Or when an ogre turns into a vampire?

In an upcoming issue of Lair Magazine, we want to provide templates for turning X creature into Y variant. Now we have some ideas for this -- lycanthropes and vampires -- but wanted to see if you all had some ideas as well.

Half-Fiend Template Half-Fiend[edit] A creature touched by powerful evil can occasionally become a half-fiend, though powerful unholy magic can cause an ordinary mortal to become a half-fiend. Most are evil, like fiends tend to be, while good half-fiends, like good fiends, are almost unheard of. Regardless of origins, a half-fiend tends to look brutish and vile, though like most fiends, a half-fiend delights in performing evil acts. Prerequisite Any flesh-and-blood creature, such as a beast or humanoid. Statistics[edit] Abilities. The half-fiend's Charisma score increases by 4, while its other ability scores increase by 2. Damage Resistances. The half-fiend resists fire and poison damage. Condition Immunities. The half-fiend is immune to the poisoned condition. Languages The half-fiend learns Abyssal or Infernal. Skills. The half-fiend gains the Deception and Intimidation skills. Senses. The half-fiend gains darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. Alignment. The half-fiend's alignment can be any evil alignment. Speed. The half-fiend gains a flying speed equal to the higher of its existing flying speed (if any) or its walking speed. Traits[edit] Innate Spellcasting (1/Day). The half-fiend can innately cast dispel evil and good (spell save DC equal to its Spellcasting spell save DC), requiring no material components. Its innate spellcasting ability is Charisma. Sense Evil and Good. The half-fiend senses powerful good and evil within 120 feet of it at will. This trait otherwise works like the detect evil and good spell but it isn't itself magical. Spellcasting. The half-fiend gains spellcasting equal to a 3rd-level sorcerer, with one more level for every 3 CR it has above CR 1 (i.e. level 4 at CR 4, level 5 at CR 7, level 6 at CR 10, up to a maximum of 10 levels gained in this way). Vile Blessing. The half-fiend has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

I found this template WAAAAAYYYY back and have been using it to great effect in many campaigns.

I like the idea of creatures infected with a disease or curse. Something like shadow dragons, perhaps. What if a beholder was afflicted with the abyssal plague, or if a dragon was cursed by a dark god? Maybe even something to do with spreading the blight or curse to people via attacks.

What about a Death Knight being restored to his former Paladin self?

An interesting one could be what would happen if a beholder dreamt of... But, I'm not sure if that's something that's allowed.

Clockwork, Revenant, Fiendish, and Celestial would all be nice.

The half-dragon template is already in the Monster Manual. Are you specifically looking for something different?

Skeletons and Zombies kind of have a template in the DMG, but all the other undead types are lacking anything, and effects of magical diseases like vampirism and lycanthropy would be nice to see as well. For something unique, how about creatures that have been infused with energy from one of the inner planes?
