I trained in Autocad for 2D and SolidWorks for 3D cad. These days, I run Cubify Design in a virtual Windows machine on my Mac. It works exactly like the drawing part of SolidWorks, so am completely at home with it.

aaah cool!! and an app for iPad! mindblown thanks for the heads up on that one!

Onshape is a really great tool to learn. Once you get used to making basic geometries like this you can start to play with assemblies and use it for all sorts of different applications. I've used it to plan my synth case, sketch module layouts (import the DXF into Kicad), and all sorts of other hobby related stuff. Even just mundane things, for example I was replacing a broken cupboard handle the other day and a 2 operation model in Onshape saved me a good £3 for a metal door handle. Also if any fellow students have a .ac, .edu, or .sch email address you can sign up to get the student plan which gives you access to private documents. Also also they have an excellent intuitive mobile app which lets me do CAD on my iPad when on the go.
