yeah i think there is an external box for a time code unfortunately this one didnt come with it :(

Yea that is exactly what the 'RACAL' was used for...as soon as I saw it I was pretty sure that is what it was. So ALL communication at the airport (and other places) is recorded...so many different frequencies depending on if it is the Center controller or the Tower system...whenever there was a discrepancy on a radio call the pilots would ask for the tapes to be marked...and either an actual mark...or later a time stamp was used, so they could rewind the tapes to that point and review the radio call...it is all solid state now.

Gotta love them telephone patchbays! I can remember solder-patching similar models in Berlin about then years ago when they were still in use in some places. They were super annoying to work with when you needed to patch in the farthest row just above your head while trying not to kill any of the other lines 😬
