meeting techmoan!

by the way I shot this earlier today, the livestream crashed at the 10 hour mark and finished itself haha :( :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW0SOnxHFSw

currently uploading a video to the museum of everything else on updated code for the massive VFD seven segment display! by Ennar and Caustic :)

so yes the plan for this announcer is to just get it working in the setting its supposed to work, they are quite hard to come by now a days, so ill be making it its own telephone number on the exchange to call through to.

to barrie: yeah, I recently go an ATA in from linksys, it was listed on amazon a PAP2T I believe, to hook up a sip/voip service to my own shananingans of old telephones :_)

I'll wait patiently then for the number to be posted online :_)

In my deployments, IAX or SIP, the trunks are IP passlisted from the VSP and connection is outwards, so no need to add any NATting. But I see what you mean if you'd like to open it up to others outside of PSTN. I just thought about getting a trunk sponsored and a "real number"

My thoughts were Pi with Asterisk with an IAX Trunk from a VSP. IAX is simpler to work with through NAT and is far less susceptible to VoIP attacks which are a constant problem. An ATA can provide connection to the Strowger and thence to the Announcer. DISA set up on Asterisk will simply announce "Welcome to the Museum of Everything please dial the extension number" I can even donate a PAP2 which will give two lines to connect to the exchange.. People could dial in from either PSTN, via the VSP number, or a PC softphone that supports IAX (e.g. Zoiper) again keep away from SIP unless you want to spend time really hardening down connections. An alternative would be to connect to a POTS line using a Linksys or similar ATA. The Pi/Asterisk solution would of course support other VoIP phones around the museum. I seem to remember that the Announcers could support a number of circuits - the amp being low impedance output so a number 600 Ohm connections could be made.

that was my line of thinking too. I'm thinking SIP aware router (think Fritz!box) or Cisco ATA (both are easy to obtain and donate for me) and Asterisk, or just a SIP account programmed in. Benefit of Asterisk is that it could be opened up for direct IP calling.

These same announcers were used by British Rail initially making Christmas service change announcements and then Talking Timetables. We were one up on the Dial A Disk as we used a Revox open spool machine rather than a Ferrograph!

Mr B Shepherd

This would be a simple exercise on a Raspberry Pi running Asterisk with a suitable VoIP ATA to handle the decadic dialling interface and a VoIP service providers provided number.

Mr B Shepherd

"If you know the extension you require, you have dialled an incorrect number. Please check and try again."

excellent news! looking forward to this

however possibly further down the line :D. but yes definitely want to wire it up so outside can call in!

Look Mum No Computer

it is part of the plan yes!!!

Sam, are you considering to hook up some VOIP to exchange interface? So people can dial in to the museum from outside if so desired. You could make available a SIP phone number perhaps? It would be great to announce the actual museum opening hours or something else silly and interactive, like patching VOIP through to control / mix with a synth!
