Rotgrind Bestiary: Custodian Knight

Howdy, folks! ToTellStories here, taking a break from laying out the GIGANTIC JULY RELEASE SEND HELP THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING PICTURES AND WORDS AND MAPS AND I AM DROWNING AAAAAAAA--

…But let’s ignore the future for the sake of my sanity. Instead, let’s cut to the Wayback When Machine. It’s August of 2021. We’re at the extremely early stages of Rotgrind’s development; OnCall hasn’t even pitched the basic concept in his head to Zoran at this point. Outset exists, but a lot of it is nebulous. I have evil schemes involving reaching out to some of our fantastic fanartists in our Discord community to get them drawing things to add to the pitch package, and I’m trying to show how amazing these artists are. Then known Discord deviant Dancwart posts this divine doodle:

EGG. KNIGHT. I. AM. EXCITE. …But we still have no idea who he is. OnCall then proceeds to say, “I know what he is. He’s undead and he protects chickens.” He stats it, renaming it to a custodian knight instead (because who would name something in a TTRPG after eggs? Weirdos, that’s who). This guy came at the very start of developing undead labor in Outset! What a trailblazer! We get dancwart to turn the sketch into something more refined for the setting pitch, resulting in this:

The knight goes into the pitch, Zoran accepts OnCall’s mad ramblings, we keep working on the setting, and time marches on… and we fail to share the custodian knight with the world, because he never quite fit with the releases we had planned. After all that time, his art didn’t quite align with the setting anymore, so I reached out to Dancwart again to give him another go. That gave us HIM:

OnCall let me write some fun lore for him, so now we can share him, and thank our lucky stars that he wasn’t walking by Granny Sweet’s restaurant when a certain chimken met his demise.

We have a *lot* of awesome monsters from the early days of Rotgrind that haven’t seen the light of day (or the depths of the city) yet, ready to join you (or oppose you) in your adventures through the First City. But alas, you’ll have to wait…
