Little bit about the editing process

Hi,

Now and then I get some messages about my personal editing process when creating these HMVs, so I thought it would be nice to give some insight on it for those interested.

I use Davinci Resolve for the audio stuff, cutting and color grading, and After Effects for the final compositing and effects. Everyone has their own preferences on software but I've found these the most useful personally. Not delving too deep on the specifics, here's a short summary on the process:

Firstly, after creating the audio track, I cut the main timeline on Resolve with some basic keyframe animations and a lot of speed adjustments/ramping in the clips. The raw cut is not too impressive looking at that point, but next I'll color grade every clip one by one to have matching vibes and cohesion throughout and give some personal touch to the clips. Resolve has some really good tools for color grading so I highly recommend it. The paid version also includes some nice factory effects and transitions that are sometimes useful (the Resolve free version is really solid as well).

After finishing the color grading, I export the timeline in lossless format and import it to After Effects, where rest of the editing is done. This includes compositing each shot with some creative additions like lens effects, particles flying around, glitches, motion blur, chromatic aberration etc. I've gathered a lot of stock video/image material for this which helps a lot, and when it comes to effect plugins, I just use the factory stuff that comes with the software. Haven't needed any third party plugins yet. Some of the scenes are these "split screen" scenes, which means I need to rotoscope/remove the background from the clips. For this I use the basic AE Rotobrush. So basically I just go through each clip one by one and add some nice effects that comes to mind. Takes a lot of time, but I find it pretty chill to do.

Here's a little example of the 2B-video from different parts of the process: [LINK HERE]

Anyways, I hope some found this interesting :) Have a great week everyone!
