The Green Goo Behind Felkin

For the Felkin commission, one of the requests was for a background scenery behind the fel druid. I don’t often draw backgrounds, so it took a bit of experimentation and playing around, and I thought I’d share the process here!
- I forgot who said it, but the trick to drawing backgrounds is to just start putting down colors. In my sketch I had the concept of a tree stump, with green fel goo oozing out of it. So I followed the pencil outline and filled in a rough shape of a tree stump
- Still following the pencil line, I added some detail to the tree stump
- And added some highlight
- That was it for the tree stump. I figured with the glowing goo, most of the detail would be obscured anyway. With that I started drawing the goo, making it overflow everywhere
- And added some highlight to the goo
- I love drawing glowing things (in case this isn’t obvious from my drawings 😉), so from here I was pretty much just adding glow to the fel goo, starting from the pool in the tree stump
- And more ambient green glow for the goo on the ground
- And with some more ambient in the foreground and little glowing specks, voilà!
