The Green Goo Behind Felkin

For the Felkin commission, one of the requests was for a background scenery behind the fel druid. I don’t often draw backgrounds, so it took a bit of experimentation and playing around, and I thought I’d share the process here!

I forgot who said it, but the trick to drawing backgrounds is to just start putting down colors. In my sketch I had the concept of a tree stump, with green fel goo oozing out of it. So I followed the pencil outline and filled in a rough shape of a tree stump
Still following the pencil line, I added some detail to the tree stump
And added some highlight
That was it for the tree stump. I figured with the glowing goo, most of the detail would be obscured anyway. With that I started drawing the goo, making it overflow everywhere
And added some highlight to the goo
I love drawing glowing things (in case this isn’t obvious from my drawings 😉), so from here I was pretty much just adding glow to the fel goo, starting from the pool in the tree stump
And more ambient green glow for the goo on the ground
And with some more ambient in the foreground and little glowing specks, voilà!
