LoSP Lore Compendium: Divinity Factors
Added 2025-08-05 18:01:30 +0000 UTCSo, I'm taking a bit of time to come here and talk about one of the most questioned topics in any of my fics: The power scale for my characters.
To be honest, for LoSP, this gets a bit tricky because of the Ancient Laws and the fact that demigod powers are widely varied, with each demigod being different in both power sets and the power scale, even if they are born from the same parent.
And when you bring the gods and titans in, the power scale becomes skewed because a god's power is defined by more than a single factors, unlike demigods (where in only the more powerful/ unique ones get two factors).
For a demigod, most have a measure of native power and that's about it. Emotion does affect the power, so does fate, but those are in the rarer of cases, specifically when a demigod is highly emotional and/or pissed, which might allow them to push past their native power and tap into the wider, divine domain.
Keep in mind that this is usually the last stand stuff. Think Thalia going full thunder-bod mode after Aura stabbed her fatally (where in fate played a hand too).
Though, all in all, the power levels stay mostly consistent, regardless of what's happening around. The only time it varies is for some demigods, like Percy, when they are in their parent's domain. The Hunters of Artemis have something similar due to the blessing and so do the children of the underworld.
A god's power on the other hand depends on a MULTITUDE of factors like:
Where they are: Location affects gods more than demigods. The Olympians are stronger within their own domain and on Olympus, but weaken to a degree as they go away from it.
What's happening in their domain: A god's power can change with a change in their domain. For instance, if a massive forest burns down, Artemis' immediate power may take a hit. Pan weakened when the wild began to die, tumbling to a point where he was about to fade.
Their position: Olympians, as the ruling council are more powerful than other gods and Titans. With position comes strength.
Long term usage: Demigods recover power way faster than gods do, in proportion to their body healing. The gods, on the other hand, need to conserve divine strength in the longer term and act carefully. If they don't, they might not be at full strength when they truly need it.
Belief: Something common in gods, demigods, and mortals is the power of belief. If you believe you can do it, you just might. But if you don't believe, you will definitely fail. It affects all, but gods can specially be hindered by it.
The Opponent they face: Gods have to limit themselves drastically when facing mortals, a fact Percy has used to his advantage multiple times.
The collateral: Even if a god is facing another god, they might have to limit themselves a bit, if demigods/mortals are present. Collateral damage must be considered.
Mortal worship: The more a god is revered/ worshiped, the more powerful they become. This sometimes includes indirect worship too, like fishermen thanking the sea.
Native Power and age: Some gods are naturally more powerful, something that increases with age just like it does for demigods.
Keeping all this in mind, a god's power varies in a wide range as compared to a demigod.

Interesting Lore post, though, I have to admit that I'm always disappointed when it's a lore post, instead of a new chapter.
