Spiritual Amnesia & Reconnecting To The Source
Added 2022-06-02 13:38:36 +0000 UTCWhen beginning the journey of expanding consciousness and studying metaphysics, it is very tempting to try to believe in the information provided, to have faith that it is true. However, blind faith is not necessary, blind faith is simply a control mechanism and should not be adopted under any circumstances.
True faith is adopted when facts are present. You understand the basic facts of electricity, lights and switches, so that every time you flick a switch you know the light will come on. You wouldn't flick the switch if you had no faith in the light turning on. But, due to the knowledge you have, the faith is present and so is the result of the light turning on.
Expanding consciousness and coming to metaphysical realisations should be approached with the same mindset. I don't want any of you to read something like 'the universe is mental' and try to believe it or try to have faith in it. I want you to study the facts, question them, question your own beliefs, meditate on all of this and then come to the realisation yourself.
Faith is found in the work, in the accumulation of factual information.
With that being said, I feel as though now is a good time for an article like this. If you have worked your way through other metaphysical content on this Patreon, you should be ready. If not, you can come back to this article in future. There's no rush to learn. Go at your own pace, the information will always be here you are free to go over everything as much as you want or ask any questions.
Anyway, let's get to it.
The Illusion of The Surface Self
To begin with, it is necessary to realise the following:
At the core of your being, at the centre of your consciousness, is the creator that is present in all other manifestations you see around you: people, animals, trees, plants, everything.
Your conscious mind is the surface level of what you are as your whole conscious being. Your identity is an even smaller fraction of this, it is a fragment of your conscious mind. Your identity will probably constitute of your name, gender, age, job, place of birth, where you live, what you like, etc. But, none of that is the real you, they are merely concepts used to describe fleeting pieces of information.
The box analogy explains this well: if you ask me, 'who are you?', I will hand you a box. In this box is a selection of characteristics I use to describe who I am, my name, gender, age, job, etc.
However, this box only consists of what I consciously select to add to it. I cannot add anything about myself that I can't remember, but that doesn't mean the things I can't remember aren't part of who I am, or that they don't exist.
So this box is flawed, it is only a small part of who I am. But then, there is the creator of the box. The 'thing' that exists outside of the box that is able to overlook all the characteristics and pick and choose which ones it adds to the box and which ones it leaves out. This 'thing' also has to exist outside of the box so that it can hand it to you, the box can't give itself to you, it requires something to hand it over.
The 'thing' that exists outside this box is your consciousness. Not your conscious mind or subconscious mind, but your entire conscious being.
It is this conscious being that decides what it will be. When you say, "I am ___" and add a descriptive factor, you are actually creating an entity that is separate from yourself. This conscious creator can pick and choose what it wants to identify as, but anything it chooses is merely a watered down concept of a distorted image, an illusion due to the fact that they are: A) always withering away and changing, they are never constant, B) they do not represent anything other than a mirrored image, a concept of what something actually is.
The surface self is the surface level of the whole self. Like the crust (the outer layer) of the earth is only the surface of the earth, the appearance of a chair is only the outer layer, we cannot see the atomic or molecular structures behind the surface. But, that does not mean they aren't there, and without them the surface would not be able to exist.
You must come to understand the illusion that the ego (or surface self) is. Yes, it is part of you. But no, it is not the real or whole you. In fact, it is not even a part of you, it is a creation of yours.
Spiritual Amnesia
Now, you might feel quite certain that your ego is the true you. You might say, "of course this is me, I can see myself, I have memories, other people recognise me, I know who I am" and I would reply that while you may know who you are, you do not know what you are, or why you are.
You do not know where you came from, you do not know where you are going, you don't know why you're here, you cannot even truly comprehend the fact of not existing. This is all part of who and what you are though, but this is neglected as it is hidden from plain view. Whereas the ego is obvious, it is always in front as it lives on the surface. It is much easier to see the outer layer and say, "that's what it is!" than to look at the constructive layers invisible to the naked eye and examine their structure.
Amnesia is a loss of memory. Spiritual amnesia is a loss of memory of who you are at the core of your being, the centre of your consciousness. It is easy to see why we forget our true selves, we are so caught up with how things appear that we come to believe that what something appears to be is what something is. This could not be any further from the truth though.
You are not the limited ego that you've always known, you are the intelligent consciousness that allows the very existence of yourself behind who you are.
When our attention is focused upon any one thing we become it. We exist through it. But, it is not us, it is simply what we have directed our attention at.
The years of focused attention in the ego and the physical world of the senses has developed a belief system that identifies with concepts of events and facts, mirrored images rather than the core fact itself. This has led to spiritual amnesia, forgetting about the pure consciousness that exists before all the identifications and ego characteristics, the first cause.
Identification with illusions has led to a reality that feels as if time is running out, that nothing is ever constant. This is the main cause of suffering, attachment to something that never lasts. If you were to come to the realisation that the only thing that does last is the intelligence behind everything it manifests into, you would come to realise the creator at the centre of all form, at the centre of yourself.
By now, I hope you have come to the realisation of the illusory nature of the ego, and the subtle presence of the pure consciousness at the centre of your being. We all share the same consciousness, we just direct it at different 'things' causing the appearance of separation and individuals.
Reconnecting To The Source
It probably won't be easy to digest all of this and accept it straight away. The hold your ego has over your attention and worldview will be immensely strong. If you're 25 and just starting on your metaphysics journey, you've spent 25 years in one mindset, now you're trying to transcend that and change it, it's not easy and it takes time. But, that's okay, it's now time to look at how we can do exactly that.
Like I said, this pure consciousness, the creator behind all form, is present at the centre of your consciousness. Therefore, if we are to come to the realisation of this creator and feel its presence, it is necessary that we turn away from the physical world of appearances and enter the mental world of causes.
So then it is meditation that is necessary. The type of meditation required is called 'Silent Meditation'. The aim is to block out all the distractions of the physical world and be fully present in the mental world.
15 min - 20 min is necessary. The reason being that at the start of meditation your mind will be on surface layer consciousness, the deeper you are in your meditation, the deeper to the core of your consciousness you are.
Set a timer on 15 - 20 min. Go to the most silent place you can where you won't be distracted. Focus on slightly slowing your breathing and resting your body, release the tension in your forehead, jaw, neck, shoulders, torso, legs and relax into your seat.
Direct your awareness into your own consciousness. Once the body is fully relaxed and the mind has calmed itself, begin to think about the creator behind the ego and all form. It is necessary you bring up this information and begin to question it, see if you can come to any realisations yourself.
This is not something that will come easy as you are not only diving into the deepest layers of your consciousness, but you are also breaking down a lot of belief systems that you will currently have that will be blocking access to deeper layers of consciousness. This takes time and only those with the burning desire to get there will do so as everyone else will give up. But, it is entirely possible. Be patient.
At the beginning of this article I said ," I want you to study the facts, question them, question your own beliefs, meditate on all of this and then come to the realisation yourself. " You know what to do, execute.
