Yes, that would have been an option. On the other hand he would have stopped Kaitana from fighting Ryoko by all means if he knew it was about him. He would have taken the girls to talk a few words, and make himself clear once and for all. He of course knows that Ryoko has a crush on him, but he doesn't take it for serious, and as long as Kaitana doesn't speak her concerns he will leave the situation as it is. Now that was a lengthy explanation, wasn't it? :D
