Rendering

I estimated this new machine is roughly twice as fast as my old machine.  I moved the project to the new machine and began rendering.

The first frame took exactly two minutes to render on the new machine.

I then rendered the same frame on my old machine.  It took 6 minutes and 59 seconds.

So my more educated estimate is this new machine is just a hair below 3.5 times faster than my old machine.  Zowie!  I had Raina's voice actor record the above audio clip way back when I hired her.  It's kind of dated now with my new hardware, but enjoy it for what it is. ;)

The old machine uses DDR3 memory, and the new one uses DD4 memory.  The old machine uses an i7 processor while the new one uses an i9.  I am looking for i8 processors and cannot find any.  I don't know if this is a single generation jump or two.  In any case, it's an amazing leap forward and a heck of a birthday gift!

I still have one more detail to address, but it starts on frame 4-thousand-something..  I can mess with that after I get some rest. :)

Have a great day!

EDIT: I have to shut down the rendering...  It is running at 94 degrees.. Dangerous.  Need to fix this somehow.

EDIT 2: I now have a 10" fan blowing directly on the CPU cooler..  It is 88 to 91 degrees.  I am starting to wonder if I maybe did not do such a good job of applying the thermal paste.

EDIT 3: Okay I took the cooler apart and reapplied thermal paste.  Didn't seem to make much difference.  I moved case fans from my old machine to the new one.  I also have my 10" portable fan sucking hot air out of the back.  The temperature is hovering around 89c, which is pretty awful but not dangerous.  If this holds I can keep it going until the new fans arrive on/around the 27th.  The Noctua CPU cooler is not impressing me.

EDIT 4: Okay on the suggestion of a friend I changed the fan configuration.  I had two fans on on the top blowing air down on to the CPU cooler.  I changed it to one fan on top sucking air out and one fan on the back sucking air out.  Now the CPU temp is hovering around 83c to 85c.  It is quieter too because I am no longer using my external fan.  How was I supposed to know that hot air rises?  Why don't people tell me these things?

EDIT 5: I did the thermal paste for a third time and managed to get the rendering CPU temperature down to 81c.   Yay!

Oh, and the voice message from Raina is very nice 😄

I'm learning so much! :)

Marketing 101: odd number models sell better than even. So no i2, i4, i6, or i8. The number doesn’t indicate generation either, but roughly what tier the processor is marketed at.

Sam

One thing this machine is not is silent. :)

CGMan

The i9 is a very high performance CPU with very high temperatures. A normal air cooling fan may not be efficient enough to cool it down. If the fan is set to silent mode, changing it may improve the situation somewhat. good luck!

No such thing as i2, i4, i6, i8. For some reason only odds. I3-i9, and 12 generations of them. The higher the number, the more powerful the processor. Not only is your i9 newer, it is a step up from an i7. Good to hear that it is all coming along! Can't wait for the next release!

My software doesn't support GPU rendering. I could buy Octane for that but that is $700. So that option won't be reachable for quite some time.

Nice little clip :D And glad to hear that the new computer runs that fast.

i8s do not exist. They just skipped it for some reason. I would say that whenever GPUs are at a normal price range...I would upgrade ASAP. I'm sure your rending would be significantly faster if you had a much faster GPU. It could be another 6 months to a year before GPU prices are normal again :/

I've ordered some more case fans, and case fan cable splitters. The fans should arrive on the 25th, but the splitters (which I need) will not arrive until the 27th. :/ Meanwhile I think I am going to take it apart and redo the thermal paste.

Enjoy your new, faster toy to the full, and resolve any hiccups as fast as possible ;).
