November Update Summary

Hey hey Everyone! October was a crazy busy month for me - I actually got that rare sensation at one point where I swear I felt myself leveling up - so there's lots to cover in this little update summary. For those of you who maybe new, I try to do one of these updates at the start and in the middle of each month to recap what has been created, give updates on on-going projects, preview new stuff in the works and generally just check in with everyone.

Oh, quick reminder that all of the miniature links below go to the Printable Heroes Website Catalog and you may need to log in to access your Patron rewards.

Tis the Season

October saw the first release of Seasonally Themed Miniatures that celebrate the Halloween/Fall season for a limited time before disappearing to return again next year.

Jack-O-Lanterns

I wanted to do a set of pumpkin props and I thought it'd be fun to do a seasonal variant of them as Jack-o-Lanterns for people to set the mood with their Halloween themed games.

These will be available here until 11/2. They'll return again to celebrate Halloween next year.

Graveyard Elemental

I'd actually had the idea for this one every since I first did the Earth Elemental but just hadn't had an excuse to carve out the time for it until now. Glad it finally got to see the light of day.

This will be available here until 11/2. It will live again next Halloween season.

Headless Horseman

I loved the Legend of Sleepy Hollow when I was a kid and I don't know if there is a more iconic visage for me that represents Halloween then the Headless Horseman. I was excited that it was suggested and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Also first time I'd ever really drawn a horse, so yay!

The headless horseman will be available here until 11/2. It'll be back again next year to hunt some heads.

Flaming Skull Horseman

As a kid who also grew up on Ghost Rider comics I couldn't resist doin' a flaming skull variation of the Headless Horseman.

The Flaming Skull Rider will be available here until 11/2. It'll ride again next Halloween season.

Blanket Ghosts

Blanket ghosts are such an iconic Halloween costume that it just seemed appropriate to do some ghostly blanket specters.

These Blanket Ghosts will be available here until 11/2. They'll be back to haunt your tabletop next October.

All of these Halloween themed minis will be disappearing on November 2nd to return again October of next year. If you'd like to contribute suggestions for this year's Winter themed seasonal minis you can do so as a Patron at any tier here.

Regularly Scheduled Program

With the seasonal stuff out of the way, here's a look at the miniatures that were released and added to the catalog last month.

Stirges

Stirges have been a very commonly requested mini that I was going to do as an option for a Goal Reward but ended up needing some to terrorize my players with so they got completed and released early :)

You can download them here.

Nothic

Another frequently requested mini that I ended up drawing during a live stream

You can download the Nothic files here.

Half-Orc Brawler

I created this mini so I could use it to represent Yagra Stonefist in the Dragon Heist game I'm running.

You can download the files for this Half-Orc Brawler here.

Skeleton Re-Release

I went through and updated the art, PDF formatting, and added Studio cutfiles for these skeletons, available here

Miser Shen (The Weretoad) Re-Release

I also updated the PDF formatting and add Studio Cutfile support for Miser Shen and his Weretoad form. His files are available here.

Council Miniatures

Each month my Council Patrons (Tier 5+) get to suggest and then vote on a miniature (and usually an art variant of that miniature) each month. Last month they decided on a Human Bandit and a Human Assassin art variant. If you'd like to jump in on this month's Council Mini you can check out the November Suggestion thread for Tier 5+ Patrons that just went up here.

Bandits & Assassins

You can download the bald Bandit files here, the masked Bandit files here, and Tier 2+ Patrons can download the Assassin files here.

Goal Rewards

I like to celebrate Patron milestones with bonus miniatures that will be made available (complete with back views) free to everyone. It's a cool way for my Patrons and myself to do something cool for the community as a whole and hopefully provide some cool miniature options for GMs/DMs to use at their table.

I currently have a poll going on to select an design for a previous Goal Reward, if you'd like to pick an options you can do so here.

Pumpkins!

Last month we hit the Goal Reward for this set of Pumpkin Props, which are available for download here.

The Devil in the Flesh

The next Goal Reward will be the vampire Strahd which I'm currently working on (work in progress preview above). Strahd is an official Wizard's of the Coast character so I'll have to release him through their DMsGuild, but he'll be available for free on there once he's done.

Following Strahd I'll be doing a fun set of Intellect Devourers,

And from there I'll be making it up as we go along ;)

Current and Upcoming Work

Here's some stuff that has been on-going behind the season and/or new stuff on the horizon.

The Website

Straight form Alex:

The next website update is taking a bit longer than previously estimated. When it’s done you’ll be able to sort and filter by the following things:
Challenge Rating
Environment
Creature size
Alignment
Source
Type and Subtype
It’s been a learning experience for me to not bunch up tasks. I have some things in the works that will allow me to update the site more frequently and not require you to re-login every time the site is updated [huzzah! - Marshall].
~Alex

Dragon Heist

*** Possible Spoilers Ahead ***

I've been enthralled with the latest WotC adventure Dragon Heist and I started running the initial part of the campaign with some friends so of course I've had to make some minis for it. Here's some work in progress,

I'll be releasing these as I go like the Half-Orc Brawler and then whenever I've got the whole set I'll probably put a package up on the DMsGuild with official names/colors/etc.

City Watch

I still want to do one more City Watch member and a Lamp post prop to go with 'em before I release this set of City Watch.

Water Elemental and Dryad

I've been bouncing back and forth on the Water Elemental design between everything else and just haven't come up with something I'm excited about yet. I know this is one people have been looking after for awhile, but I just want to make sure I do something that feels cool and different enough to stand out amongst the myriad of existing Water Elementals out there. As soon as I get something I'm excited about I'll share an art update.

For the Dryad, I've been struggling with an appropriate/clever way to cover her butt that doesn't compromise how I have the leaves on her front view and she's kind of been sitting on the back burner for a bit. I'm hoping to spend sometime solving that issue and get her released this month.

News

Here's where I like to call out some of the exciting tabletop/boardgame/RPG news and/or creators that catch my eye, though to be honest this month I've been pretty heads down and to the grind stone so I'm a little out of the loop.

As many of you are probably aware last month was Inktober and one of the highlights for me was following the work of  @Max_Dunbar and his incredible Evil D&D party artwork throughout the month.

Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Guide to Ravnica are coming out this month and I can't wait have all of my wonderfully laid plans completely eradicated - by this time next month I hope to have created at least one mini that I can't even comprehend at this current time.

Ross, the wizard behind 2-Minute Table Top recently finished up an epic Haunted Mansion map which is available (I believe for free) here.

The talented folks at PaperForge also did a wonderful Headless Horseman paper miniature which you can find at the Patreon here.

It's always a pleasure when I see more monster tokens from Desert Druid come across my art feed. They have such a fun style and are perfect for virtual table top tokens.

The ever wonderful Papierschnitzel has recently released an Teahouse paper model

If you're still in the Halloween spirit, @okumarts released a set of Pumpkin Cultists available through DriveThruRPG here

My good friend @TrashMobMinis recently released a pack of fiends also through DriveThrugRPG here.

Hmm, what else... I really need to get better at writing things down for this as I stumble across them, I always feel like I'm forgetting stuff. Ah well, if I missed anything I'll try to include it in the middle of the month update.

Thanks as always for taking the time to check this out and a special thanks to all of my Patrons who make all of this possible.

Here's to another exciting month, cheers everyone!

-Marshall

Comments

Cant wait to see what else you come up with, love the city watch characters and the Dryads!!! keep up the great work

Demi Perez

I agree with this post, I think maybe keep them available for like 2 weeks after the event to give people the chance to grab them? I know personally I go away with family and such on holidays so I cant grab anything straight away.

Jamie Morrow

I really appreciate the response, and I hope I didn't come across as too aggressive because I truly do love your work and the obvious passion that is behind it. I guess I was just a little miffed about missing out because your artwork truly breathes more life into my games (and I'm sure for everyone else here as well). I do agree however on your stance about wanting these mini's to feel special because they are themed around a specific festivity. I wonder if an option could be releasing these seasonal minis for a limited time only for certain tiers and below (perhaps Veteran or Champion) while higher tiers get acess to them year round? It unfortunately still removes that special festive time feeling but does allow individuals to either decide to pay less and wait for the seasonal availability or pay more and have access whenever they want year-round, although I can also see how this would easily be WAY more complicated than just releasing them for a limited time because then you'd have to possibly restructure your tiers in order to accommodate this. I guess this rant ends with me agreeing for a longer window of availability but still limited. Another suggestion would be dividing the year into segments of the various themed holidays/'festivities you do plan on making minis and have them blend into one another, aka, Halloween Mini availability ends but fear not because here come the Xmas minis right behind it (although this would also probably be a lot more work). No matter what you do though I'll still be your patron cause your work is amazing. Thanks for reading.

HMS Kaiser

Personally, I'd say slightly longer availability--but not permanent. While I can understand that everyone is busy or just might not see the notification for new minis, I also think that you're right when you say having them up all year takes away their sparkly holiday goodness. It makes them limited!

Joanna Wilkerson

Hi HMS Kaiser, I really appreciate this feedback. The seasonal minis were intended to be something fun and extra on top of what I already create each month. Just on a personal note I worked late nights and longer then I normally do over the weekends to make sure I was still able to release the normal amount of minis this month in addition to the seasonal ones. The goal was to have something festive I could bring out each year to give everyone something extra/special to be excited about. A library of fun seasonal minis that would continue to grow each year. My concern is like holiday decorations they'd quickly lose their luster and become just another brick in the wall if they're left out all year. That said the whole point was to do something extra and fun and I absolutely do not want anyone to feel punished or cheated by them. Fortunately this something I can talk to you and other patrons about and adjust with feedback, so I really do appreciate you reaching out and letting me know. Is this something that you'd feel better about if they were made available for a longer peroid of time? Like say, from September to the end of November for example? Again, my goal is to find a way to keep them feeling special/festive, something extra in addition to the regular stuff I do each month. Agian, I really appreciate your time and feedback on this. Thank you, -Marshall

PrintableHeroes

I find it disappointing that I can't get the minis that my patronage has funded just because of some arbitrary time constraint, I feel like this unfairly punishes the individuals who diligently fund your work but don't have the time to check every week for new stuff because we have jobs, families, etc. Please reconsider releasing these funded minis to us without such constraint, I'm sure many would appreciate it. Thank you

HMS Kaiser

Ugh I downloaded new minis last week, I really hope I got those horsemen and sheet ghosts.

Ryan

I really don't like that you unpublished them so soon. I just went to check them out and they're gone already.

Daryl

Fantastic month!

Stephen Hart

Lord, Strahd looks absolutely amazing. I'm just repeating myself at this point but everything is just keeps getting better and better.

Raaans

I'll just ask if you are going to make a vampire Strahd mini on foot? :)

Fernando Alonso Simón

I'll repeat what I said in a previous post, this has been one of the best months since I've became a patron! I'm still wishing for a kobolds update, and many other useful miniaures of commonly used monsters, such as dragons, wyverns, owlbears, commonfolk, town guards, and of course more PC options... but seeing how much work you are putting on this project now that you've taken as a full job, I can say that I'll just sit and wait for them to be released, because I'm sure they will eventually. Thank you for all, Marshall!!

Such a banner month!
