The recolor options for these were selected by the Council and run the gamut from rare to very well done.

Totally! I had the exact same thought! It was actually the Council that gave me the idea; I'd provided a series of different options but the top 3 votes were for what ultimately became the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd color options (the extreme fiery one I added after the fact once I saw the direction everyone else was favoring).

Looking at the color variations, I can see using the range to show a hellhound that changes state through the course of a fight, maybe getting fiercer, hotter, and more dangerous as the battle progresses. It starts out cool (the first, black version) and gradually grows red hot. The players might not realize what was happening the first time I switch from one stage to the next, but by the time I put that scorching red final phase down, they'll know they're in trouble!
