There's some long firing lines and difficult terrain to maneuver through. They'll have to be on their toes to get through safely. Or perhaps they lay in wait from the high ground for a band of goblin skirmishers trying to sneak by. Perhaps there's a pack of starving wolves that join the fray, trying to pick off the wounded on either side, dragging them off to feed. Maybe there's some sprites or water nymphs upset intruders are invading their territory. There could be treasure hidden underwater that the adventurer's are after, or rare herbs they need for crafting inks for magical scrolls.
