This fort was originally created to protect the kingdom's border and provide safe harbor to travelers and merchants along the southern corridor. Warfare became less prevalent in this area as the realms to the south were annexed, so the fort was made home to the Grand Duke of Sway. As its defenses gathered dust, it became a center for diplomatic relations and mercantile endeavors.
Jousting tournaments are held monthly with much fanfare; each with it's own theme and festivities. They can last several days and entrance fees range anywhere from 200 gp (The Pauper Games) to10,000 gp as well as a royal invitation (Emperor's Cup). The rules are ever-evolving and maintained by the Judge, who recently restricted mounts to horses after Sir Blaine of Derick's griffon ate Princess Alessa's favorite stallion between matches.
Living quarters are tucked in the corners and to the west, with the barracks and officer quarters in the southwest. The market is to the east, containing permanent stores and workshops, although its not unusual to find a number travelling merchants setting up stalls to hawk their wares during weekends and tournaments. The central area contains the Illuminated Atheneum, a multi-denominational church and the Grand Duke's residence.
