Hardware Maintenance

Hallo to you new patrons!  Seriously, I love you guys so much.  It means a heap that you're backing me with your hard-earned money.  <3

Blog post!

My primary camera is a Nikon D800E, a camera known for its robust magnesium-alloy construction and high resolution, 36 megapixel sensor.

What it's not known for is going out of whack on the regular.  Yesterday though I took it to the local repair shop, again.  I do feel lucky having an authorized Nikon shop 40 minutes away, instead of (say) in Perth, where Tamron users have to send their gear...

But this is the third time I've had it in the shop because it starts focusing on the background instead of the subject.  It doesn't happen all the time, and it's only really a problem with one of my lenses, but when it does it's maddening because you just can't see it happening on the camera.  It's only noticable when you get back to the computer and on the bigger screen it's immediately obvious that half of the images are ruined.

See the above image for the ugly proof.  The wall behind the performer is crisp and clear, which is sort of not what I wanted.

I asked the guys at the shop if this was normal, and the technician said yeah, it was.  I told him I'm basically in here every year for the same problem and he was very surprised - it might happen once in three years for some users, but every year?  That's definitely weird.

But, you know, you gotta have a camera that focuses, right?

So, three hundred bucks later, the camera does what it should.

For one more year, I guess.
