This is one of my favorite movies. I saw it when it came out. It's one of those movies that no matter how many times I see it I never get tired of it. When this came out Autism was a mystery. Back then, this was most people's first introduction to autism. I remember my mom telling me that I had a cousin who was mildly autistic. He just seemed shy to me so I never understood what she meant until I saw this movie. This was a time when they used movies to help gain acceptance and understanding for certain illnesses and diseases back then. Great reaction. This is a classic. And yes, Tom Cruise came to remember the love he had for his brother. At then end he did want what was best for him and he thought it was with him. The thing is, he could have taken care of him. Raymond was adjusting and could have come to adjust to a new routine but Tom would have needed that money to hire some help and get a bigger place and dr. Brunner was not giving it up. Without the money it would have be a serious challenge because Raymond needed someone there with him pretty much at all times. I'm glad that Raymond let Tom touch him at the end but this is not usually how it works out in reality. There are autistic people who cannot have a relationship with you. I have a friend who has a severally autistic son and she expresses sadness because she has never heard her son say I love you or hug her or so and sign that he cares if she is there. She has told me with sadness my son wouldn't care if I was here or not. I know it hurts her and she knows he can't help it but the pain isn't any different. That's what the movie was trying to show when Tom tried to hug him in Vegas. He was hurt because he was trying to show emotion and love to his brother and it was rejected. It wasn't that he needed acknowledgement for his apology or was the lack of connection. It's hard to explain but we ask want our love reciprocated.
