This one’s a tearjerker. The part that always gets me is at the end when Tara says she was afraid that Willow wouldn’t want to be around her if she found out the kind of people she came from, and Willow says “I think about what you grew up with, and then I look at what you are…It makes me proud.” 😭😭 As someone who came from an extremely abusive family, those words, and the theme of found family and the shedding of the forced, inherited, projected shame that comes from an abusive upbringing, this just really hits my heart. It’s a well-written and thoughtful episode that addresses very real and complex issues that so, so many people can relate to.

I was in a similar situation with a newcomer to a former friend group I hung with back in the day, and got to say words much like Buffy's, "We're your family now", after finding out this girl had been kicked out of home, lost their entire family, friends, and had almost an entire small town turn on them, just because they came out as a Lesbian. Every time I hear Buffy say. "We're family", it just reminds me of that moment and how happy it made this girl to hear someone finally accepting and standing up for her. Fantastic episode, tugs at all the right heartstrings in the best possible way.

The metaphor is a little bit heavy handed but it doesn’t matter because as usual the emotional resonance is what matters. Last episode Buffy found out about Dawn being inserted artificially into her family and she made the decision to make it her reality. In a way this is an expansion of that concept. Worth noting that in the « family » scene, Spike is very much part of it but Riley is absent…….
