Angel 1x9 | Hero

My full reaction to Angel Season 1 Episode 9 "Hero".

Comments

Right. It is so hard to believe that we only knew his character for 9 episodes. He seemed just as important as any of our main Buffyverse characters. And with the actor's death on top of it, is even more heartbreaking

Malinda McAteer

So Lucas (The Brachen demon that Doyle didn't save) was played by a young Sean Gunn (skinny 1st mate to Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy. And the main Cenobite looking demon was the more portly of the comedic pirates in Pirates of the Carribean...or Grumpy from Once Upon a Time.

David turned down both Superman x2 (Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill) AND Batman (Christian Bale). As Colleen said, both "Returns" and "Begins" he turned down because of Angel. It's unclear if he turned down "Man of Steel" (he was doing "Bones but) or he simply lost the part to Cavill.

David pretty much has had tv shows booked back to back for like 25 straight years so that’s the main reason he hasn’t been in many movies lol Just Bones alone was like 12 seasons 😭 I’ve always wondered if he would be down for a super hero role but back then attitudes were different about it so who knows. I could see him wanting to now but who knows if Hollywood sees him as β€œtoo old”

Thanks for the details. I didn't feel like looking it up so close to bedtime.

It must have been rough on David Boreanaz and Christian Kane, considering they were all close friends. I can understand why David allegedly said he wouldn't attend the 20th Anniversary reunion if Nicholas Brendon was there; I don't think he likes being around addicts much after losing a friend to it (and especially not one who keeps making excuse after excuse with not getting clean, allegedly scams fans out of money, and repeatedly assaults his significant others).

He actually died sooner than that. He died about 3 years after this episode aired (1999) in 2002.

Marshall Robertson

I think that David was in the conversation for Batman Begins, and couldn't commit to it because of Angel.

Colleen

This episode gets me every time 😭 especially with the passing of Glenn as well, he was such a charismatic and talented actor, it’s so sad that he wasn’t able to overcome his demons

RIP Glenn Quinn (actor who played Doyle). Glenn passed away about 6 or so years after this episode first aired. There is a really good short biography on Glenn Quinn's life and career that was put out by Star, but I don't recommend you watch it for a while yet because it talks about his role on Angel (so, spoilers). https://youtu.be/elUkgKOOyDw?si=grd2fGGLxr9w5OIR

Stormtroopers refers to a couple of things if you're talking German history. There were the Sturmtruppen or Stosstruppen (Stormtroopers or Shock Troops) of the Imperial German Army in WW1, and there was the Sturmabteilung aka the Storm Division or Stormtroopers of WW2. The Stormtroopers of WW2, even though they existed at the same time as the SS, were arguably more fanatical because they tended to be more hardcore loyal to the Nazi ideology rather than to Hitler himself, and they didn't really consider Hitler taking power in Germany to be like the ultimate victory for Nazi ideology, more like a step along the way. The SA (Sturmabteilung/Stormtroopers) were eventually mostly killed in a purge that came to be known as The Night of the Long Knives.

I'll take a stab at it - I think Storm Troopers were the name given to certain SS elite foot soldiers during WWII. That's why in 'Star Wars' they're referred to as "Imperial" Storm Troopers? Anyway, there's stuff to say about this episode but no spoilers so it will have to wait. No worries. And the audio is good πŸ‘β€

This episode gets me everytime with "Our rats are low" and "Is that it? Am I done"?
