Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was a key figure in Disney's animation renaissance in the 1990s, had a falling out with Disney's then-CEO Michael Eisner and left the company. Katzenberg went on to co-found DreamWorks with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. "Shrek" was seen by many as a satirical take on Disney's fairy tale formula. The film pokes fun at classic Disney tropes and even includes a character, Lord Farquaad, who is believed to be a thinly-veiled parody of Disney executives. Katzenberg's involvement in the project added fuel to the perception that "Shrek" was a form of retaliation against Disney.
