Fresh Off the Truck: New Micro-Expansion Preview

Touhou fanworks have expanded to numerous forms and genres of media. We’ve long wanted to capture this in Danmaku!! and from that desire came the concept of “Big Incidents.”

Like incidents, these cards changed some basic game rules. Unlike incidents, they never resolve! Before you sweat too much, no there isn’t a permanent Lily White (yet). As a permanent alternate game mode it’s important that it affects everyone equally, so we won’t make cards like Voyage to Makai or Spring Snow. Additionally they should really not be called incidents or even big incidents. For better or worse the answer kept jumping out at us.

Introducing the isekai deck. This character card sized deck is full of alternate game modes, and before the game starts you get one isekai from the deck and play with that rule for your entire game.

We’ve chosen two very different isekai cards to show you, so you can get an idea of the variety involved.

OK but why orange? Why the vague bee theme?

TL;DR:

Not long enough; read more

We’ve mentioned that for Big Box we wanted to try out different art styles. Here’s a sketch that shows off the concept.

Here we’ve not just changed the illustration but the entire card frame. We redid the frame ourselves for Flowering Night’s Hanabi deck, but for something like the isekai deck we’d get our artists to redraw the card frame along with the illustration, to make the card one cohesive whole.

For Pocket Youkai we’d want something pixelated with baby forms of the three characters on the current card. Don’t you want baby Yuuka in a flower pot as your starter?

When the Youkai Cry we’d style as one of those visual novels full of murder. I know at least two of our regular artists would love to draw some creepy cuteness.

This also allows us flexibility in the card text. Pocket Youkai is very handwavy right now, and some of the other cards in our backlog have a lot of rules to them.

So to summarize, the Beemaku card frame isn’t final, but we wanted to show you all this concept we’ve been working on behind the scenes and needed a new card frame for that.
