Comments

I’m convinced that Nvidia is deliberately trying to reduce their position in the gaming GPU market. Supplying the gaming market comes with too great an opportunity cost, given they can sell everything they can produce in AI and professional. They believe it isn’t worth maintaining market dominance in gaming at the expense of selling less AI chips now, even if demand for AI chips may decline in future. Their total dominance in that market means they will still be fine, even if that market shrinks. They probably also believe that their brand prestige in gaming is so entrenched it can survive several generations of them blatantly ignoring gaming, and that their CUDA ecosystem (which they won’t neglect) gives them a perpetual lock on creative and professional. The removal of 32-bit PhysX shows that this generation was designed primarily for the professional market. All of the heavy lifting in gaming performance uplift is being done via software i.e. DLSS 4. Gaming was an afterthought when it came to architecture. They will keep designing the “gaming” chips, but will only provide enough of them to supply the professional market, to keep their laptop manufacturer relationships going until their APUs are ready, and to keep a “paper presence” in DIY gaming. TL;DR They aren’t just dropping the ball for Radeon to pick up; they are holding the door open for them and hoping they don’t stumble walking through.
