Discussing 2025

So, the year is over, and we will have already discussed it with Dawid...but what about 2025? For the final episode of the year, we plan to discuss our hopes, our worries, and the products we are most excited for in the next year! Feel free to write in about almost anything, but at a minimum we plan to touch on:

You have ~14 hours to submit! Be respectful and as concise as possible to be considered!

Can people just vow to be normal for the new year? I think I have had enough craziness for this decade.

Aiden Maltbie

I have the Sapphire Pulse 7900 XTX. While I am happy with its overall performance, it's becoming clear in many recent titles that it's pretty gutless when it comes to advanced ray tracing and path tracing or, worse, can't use those features at all in the case of Indiana Jones. I am very interested in the RTX 5080 as it should offer at least as good overall performance while being incomparably better at path tracing. My question is, should I sell my card now or wait and sell afterwards? My model is pretty unique in that it is the only AIB model of the XTX that will fit in a mid-tower case. At the time I'm posting this there are literally none on eBay. Do you think that it will hold its value due to its form factor and VRAM amount?

Craig Wolf

will there be a 8800XTX with 32 GB of ram?

What do you think of the chances of Nvidia buying Qualcomm for cheaper cpu cores? It would be a smart move to wipe x86 out.

Kiln God

Any chance of a threadripper with a built in halo gpu?

What do you think of AMD's strategy with APUs this gen? I'm cautiously optimistic about strix Halo although I think it will be priced too high at launch (just look how bad the initial lineup of strix point laptops were priced). Kraken seems like they did the bare minimum over hawk point and the one area where they have a legit advantage (integrated graphics) they're gatekeeping behind most expensive skus. It doesn't seem like a strategy to gain market share to me...

So we're seeing some leaks that nVidia 5000 series is (possibly) expanding the use of AI in the rendering pipeline for things like texture details and de-noising of raytracing (ref Daniel Owen on "neural rendering" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM79XC4RtpQ ) . Is this likely to be a DLSS 1.0 moment where nVidia again jumps over AMD in desirable features (even if the new features aren't quite up to par yet) and is able to maintain their market share despite their much higher prices? AMD will have new FSR (on launch??) that will get much closer to DLSS quality, but it seems like nVidia could have an answer to keep their mindshare going.

For 2025 I am mostly interested in RDNA 4 as I have already given up hope years ago that NVIDIA will release anything with reasonable price/performance or if they do it will come with tradeoffs like VRAM (like the 3070). I also looking forward to the adoption of SteamOS on third party hardware and the potential launch of the Series S killer Steam Machine and the new Steam Controller.

Will 2025 be the year when we see LLMs and natural-sounding Text-to-Speech being used for NPCs? Can GPUs properly multitask between rendering and running an LLM? Will AMD's poor LLM performance hold back gaming?

James Railton

Any specific hardware you guys are looking forward to in 2025? For me it's low end RDNA 4 and probably more APUs from AMD. They've been on a roll in mobile.

CompressedAIBlocks

Was x86s killed due to resources allocation or because while debloating would be nice it's not entirely needed?

CompressedAIBlocks

Will Bartlett Lake ever make it's way to LGA1700 DIY? Honestly seems like 8 Raptor Cove cores would be their best bet for gaming...sadly.

CompressedAIBlocks

Does the Nvidia APU exist as another way that Intel and/or AMD won't ever be able to fully lock Nvidia out of the laptop market?

CompressedAIBlocks

How do you see DLSS vs FSR? Honestly I thought FSR would be so aggressive when coming out and people would shift away from DLSS but that's not the case. In fact I'd argue DLSS has only gotten better and widened the gap further. Will FSR 4 close the gap or do you think it'll always be behind DLSS?

CompressedAIBlocks

What do you think 2025 holds for Microsoft Gamepass, their games coming to other platforms, and Phil Spencer?

I'm definitely looking forward to the Switch 2/Super Switch/whatever it goes by. I didn't buy the Switch 1/original Switch as it didn't really interest me for years, and there was a lot of talk about the next generation coming before much longer by the time I found it interesting (seriously, it was early this year that I started finding it interesting). Hopefully the Switch 2/Super Switch will be better able to run higher end games well, given even Hogwarts Legacy tends to make the current generation struggle. Otherwise, hopefully Zen 6 and RDNA 5 will be good and not be delayed (I plan to upgrade my PC early 2026).

Trevor Renfro

When are we getting gigacasting , 48V architecture and Tesla standard connectors in our PCs. We are still stuck on Model T style stamped steel, obsolete Philips screws and janky connectors like the 24 pin and the 12+4 pin connnector.

Martin Erhardsen

Regarding RDNA 4 and FSR 4, I'd be most excited to see AMD's take on Ray Reconstruction and what that could do for RDNA GPUs or even as a software feature in future consoles. Do you think AMD working on their version of Ray Reconstruction is a realistic expectation?

Barry Smith

With Steam now on ChromeOS, could ChromeOS (or Android) start to become a real Microsoft alternative?

Zach J

Thanks for the content Tom and good luck in the new year. Do you think Microsoft will push through and get windows on ARM in a good state or will the initiative bleed out again? In a couple of years all the cheap laptops/office PCs could be running on Qualcomm/Mediatek SoCs or it could be a joke we're all laughing at (again...).

Bart

Hey Tom and Dawid! I'm sure this has been asked before but for Nvidia is the next step for them to start making and designing their own CPU's to grow as a company?

yoda king

No one needs buy anything than RTX 50 series, which will be priced SUPER low for the performance and features!

Jen-Hsun Huang

Why is everyone trying to muscle into the laptop market? Is is really that profitable? Judging from Intel they barely make any money

Sakosha

Ton I think you mentioned that not all of the things/features were successfully implemented in zen5. I wonder what those improvements are. Will this mean that zen6 will be even bigger improvement over zen5 than zen5 was over zen4?

QuickJumper

Is Battlemage really available at MSRP? I agree with you that it's not a compelling recommendation if $270-$300 is the "real" price, or if it's limited production. Strix Halo is the most significant product of 2025 and it will change the market if it works. Do we know anything about which OEMs might be interested, and for what kind of PCs?

magneticmanul

Have you heard anything about RDNA4 besides the "8800XT"? When talking about RDNA 4, its been almost exclusively the top die thats being discussed. And with Intels B580 it would be interesting what amds plans are for the lower end (8600/xt)?

eisbaer

I am full of optimism about lots of 2025 tech promises being broken 🤣 Thank you both for your content, really makes my weeks shorter when I'm on the road a lot. I am actually looking forward to seeing how handhelds evolve in 2025, the Legion Go 2 looks super impressive and Steam OS support is such a great move and should save the MS license cost!

Richard P

Will AMD not fuck up another launch for RDNA4

xpk20040228

Will Nvidia continue making apps or features in the forthcoming generation of RTX cards that the previous generations are mot able to use? Thank you for a great year of PC content! Keep up the good work.
