Reader Mail for November 2024 Loose Ends!

It goes without saying that Tom will be spending the first part of the livestream analyzing Battlemage and discussing Pat's removal from Intel, but additionally - the following developments have occurred over the past 4 weeks:

You have ~16 hours to submit below!

Comments

Would you bet One Billion Dollars that Pat was fired because he refused to license our IP, as we generously offered years ago?

Jen-Hsun Huang

Now that we know for certain that the 9800x3d doesn’t have the clock speed limitations that zen3 and zen4 x3d had. Is there any updates on the ccd configuration of the 9950x3d?

Planet_9

Hey mooreslawisdead, this is a second question. With how windows is completely inconsistent with AMD, do you continue to see this kind of preferential treatment should Intel be bought by a different company? If so, do you think AMD might try to go to other software companies, or create its own?

Sherif Lotfy

Do you think that AMD botched the Zen 5 launch when you see that there were problems with Windows that got the light shown on them and because it wasn't the X3D version all that got fixed before the X3D was launched. I think that it was a bad situation, but I think AMD made the right choice otherwise the X3D would have been less favorable. The next 3D is the one that actually gets a lot of sales right?

Early80sPC-Gamer

Do you think the PlayStation 5 pro was overpriced or priced to prevent scalpers so there wasn't a run on them? Did Sony decide to pocket the money that the scalpers were getting? Actually I think that the scalpers were getting a lot more money.

Early80sPC-Gamer

Dr. Ian Cutress said on a recent stream about Pat's firing that part of Intel's problem is that it hasn't decided if it's a fab company with products, or a product company with fabs. Do you think this is the right way to frame Intel's problem? If it's not, then what is?

Cleansweep

Hey Tom, will a penny picker CEO be Able to reduce costs for Intel that much that they can become profitable again. Their fabs are just money burning machines and their pruducts dont have much synergie. Or is the objective for the new CEO to sell Intel for a good price?

AI-Soldier789

A while ago, you talked about how AMD wanted more types of cores FOR their CCDs, such as the normal core, the C-cores, and "efficiency cores". However, aren't they already making efficiency cores in the form of their mobile chips? I don't think that this plan is as complicated as it sounds.

3-Valdion Dreemur

I dont think there was anything inherently wrong with pat, he is a guy that you would think would do very well but i think he made a mistake in strategy. Spending Endless amounts of money despite closing down business units like optane and building out fab capacity while showing that fabs are the major reason why intel is losing money was just a boneheaded move. I would wager that Intel has enough capacity in the nodes that they offer already (newest meme nodes like 18a excluded). And throwing more money at capacity when you cant fill what you have a decent about is just throwing good money after bad.

Bangforbuck

I think Pat's problem was just that he was the man from the past. Like he is surely intelligent but his ideas on how to lead the company or what to invest in just wouldn't work these days. I still think it's catastrophe for Intel. Are they going to build new strategy? They already invested billions in wrong avenues.

QuickJumper

Battlemage has just been announced with the 570 and 580. What are your thoughts on them? Also: Why aren't they releasing a 24GB version of the 580? That would be a killer deal for everyone requiring tons of VRam, without wanting to pay the exorbitant NVidia taxes.

Dave Scholze

I still haven’t been able to get a 9800x3d, how much longer might it be?

AnotherChris

Hi, Tom. Do you agree that it was losing the TSMC discount because of Pat's big mouth that was the last straw that made the board push him out?

coladict

Hey Mooreslawisdead, hope you are well. I’m looking to upgrade to the Zen 6 11950x3d, if that’s what it’s going to be called. How strong will x3D Zen 6 be in comparison to x3D Zen 5, and do you have an estimate on when the x3D lineup will be released for Zen 6?

Sherif Lotfy

Personal case at work. I wanted to build a reasonably-priced workstation PC for classical ML. This meant that in most cases I needed a powerful CPU, as well as lots of memory. I had to settle for 9950X + 192GB of RAM. But if I could I would have gone for even more RAM and cores. Are there plans with Zen6 and X970(?) to allow for way more memory? Like 512GB or may be a terabyte

Sakosha

Have you got any info on how the Intel strategy might change with a new CEO? Will they look for a person that's going to abandon Arc and most other side projects?

Sakosha

What is the likelihood of this scenario? Nvidia dominating high end, 5070 ti and up due to the high prices (and lack of competition). AMD dominating mid range, presumably if the leaked performance is true. Intel taking over low end gaming if they don't mess up their drivers at launch.

JonWickBoomStik

If the 5080 and 5090 become known as professional/non-gaming cards, should GPU reviewers avoid those cards similar to other professional cards (ex. Quadro)?

Endless Logins

Good day Tom, Test that Bloodborne performance on PS5 Pro yet?

Endless Logins

Do you think the replacement of Gelsinger will have any outwardly apparent effect on Intels strategy? Might Tsmc reinstate that 20% off deal that got torpedoed by Pat not keeping his trap shut?

Lucas

Any nuggets you gleaned from TAP's appearance on the nerd cast?

Russell Purcell

Tom, In your best guess, what is your prediction of what may happen to the GPU market if the next generation of cards is more expensive than the current generation? Will the estimated performance leaks be enough to sway people to upgrade?

Mark Smith

Hey Tom, this one's not really related with the current events or gaming in general by that much, but have you heard anything about a real successor to Alder-Lake-N using newer E-cores only like Skymont or Darkmont? In my opinion these chips are still competitive (due to their relatively low price and complexity for a modern x86 SoC), not only for entry level PCs but also NAS servers, embedded and industrial applications.

KingKoro

Tom, is the 8800XT more or less a 4070TI? Looking at UDN, it should double the ray tracing cores again over 8800XT, but will this matter with mega lights or other new technology?

Kiln God

Hi, Tom. Keep up the good work. I just want to talk through my upgrade thoughts. I have an AMD 3900X with a RX 6800XT on my desktop with an OLED 3440 Ultrawide 165Hz. I was considering buying a 5700X3D but I'm mostly satisfied with my 3900X in gaming performance and I don't want to spend money to lose encoding performance (Handbrake), I considered getting a 5800X or 5900X but I would rather put that money aside for my next upgrade, so I'm staying where I'm at until I get AM5. I want to buy a 9800X3D but I dont live near a Microcenter and I feel like Im not held back significantly by my existing CPU until I get a GPU upgrade. I'm hearing that Zen6 might have a 12 or 16 core CCD, so would you consider waiting for Zen6 (X3D or not) for someone not in a hurry to upgrade? On the GPU front, I mostly play Warframe and that runs at 165Hz Max settings very well. But I do occasionally play single player eye-candy games like Ratchet and Clank and notice the hit to FPS. I do turn down settings but it doesnt give me the warm fuzzy feeling to to so. Im looking for a at least a 50% increase in performance, but I dont want to spend an arm and a leg on a GPU, so unless the 8800XT (presumable name) matches the 7900XTX and is 500$ or less, Im going to wait for 9000 series. For mobile gaming: I have A laptop with an intel i7-6700hq, a GTX 1060 6GB, and a 1080p 60 Hz screen. For my mobile gaming needs, the graphics performance is fine, but for the last 3 years I feel that the CPU has been chugging in some areas. So when I heard about Strix Halo, I knew that that is what I was waiting for. I was disappointed that it was delayed, but I waited this long, I can wait longer. At this point Strix Halo Laptops are expected 2025 Q1 - Q2, and recently I have heard you bring up Medusa Point/Halo. I assume Medusa is at least another year out from after Strix Halo. how much more efficient would Medusa Point have to be, or how much more powerful would Medusa Halo have to be to for you to consider skipping Strix Halo and waiting longer?

I Dude

Hey Tom, do you think a new CEO can "fix" Intel. Since pats plan to fix it with engineering failed. Is any intel who survives going to be relevant in CPUs, or is the only Intel you think maybe saved will be the foundry business. Vibe check, I know there is no answer that you can give that is concrete.

Swiggles

Tom, can you confirm rumors that 25% of B580's die size is a crypto miner mining ETH for Intel?

KarbinCry

Hi Tom, Hypothetically, if Zen 6 only got another 5%-10% performance improvement, what do you think would be the impact of people's thoughts on platform longevity as a selling point? Also, say if Zen 6 standard only got a small performance over Zen 5, but then Zen 6 X3D got a massive performance uplift, would AMD keep insisting on releasing Zen 6 X3D well after Zen 6 standard?

Resident Mexican

Hi Tom, on a scale from paper to launch, how much do you think battlemage was rushed so that they could say that they desktop die out "in 2024". If they didn't have that deadline looming over them, do you think we would have seen a higher end battlemage die instead or is this just a nail in the coffin for axg?

Alex Smith

Hi Ton and Dam Should Microsoft just make windows free? There's already bunch of live service like ads baked in so might as well? Not to mention technically one can just never activate a copy and they'll get litterly all the functionality of a paid version other than to change the wallpaper LMAO.

Falto

Tommyguns. Battlemage genuinely sounds good if you ignore it being like 18 months late, having potentially awful drivers and not booting games, and being on a newer node than N33. /s in case it was lost there 😜

CompressedAIBlocks

Hi Tom, Is there any connection between Pats sacking and Intel being up for sale? Perhaps he didn't want to be involved with for example Samsung
