Discussing PS5 Pro, RDNA 4, Arrow Lake, Zen 5, and XBOX w/ NXGamer (Guest Telegrams)

The next episode of Broken Silicon will see us be joined by Michael from NXGamer! Michael is an industry veteran who also happens to be one of the best hardware analyzers in the techtuber space, and thus it's always great to have him on to talk about BOTH console and PC gaming hardware.

Needless to say, we will be discussing the PS5 Pro and the state of XBOX a ton - but please put in Zen 5, Arrow Lake, RDNA 4, and Nvidia questions too!  He really can speak about anything going on with silicon in general...so nothing is off the table here.

You have ~48 hours to submit!

I guess, what i was really asking was can we make an AI based upscaling solution work on the base PS5 ? I don't see why we need special hardware for it

Cypto_AI_TechBro_Scam

To answer this, PS5 doesn’t come with hardware that PS5 Pro is using to run their upscaler

How do you guys think they managed to redesign Zen 2 for 4nm? Since Zen 2 was design compatible with their 6nm refresh I’m very surprised there hasn’t come out any other possible design tweaks or improvements that wouldn’t break BC but would benefit Pro SDK. Always look forward to you guys discuss hardware together!

A second question I have is whether the stock of these computer parts will be affected in the US due to tariffs, will there be less of the products and price increases?

Good day you two, as the 9800X3D has shown Zen5 on Ryzen 9000 is heavily restricted by its IO-Die would a switch to TSMC 5NM be enough to fix that problem for a Zen5+ or is TSMC 3NM like it was originally planned the option for Zen5+

Hi Tom & Michael. Do you have information if the next RDNA 4 GPUs will have a VirtualLink USB-C port? I want to try out a PSVR2 or another reasonably priced VR headset (without adapters). On RDNA 3, only the own AMD reference models had a VirtualLink USB-C port, why no other models?. Is the interest from gpu board makers rising or declining regarding VirtualLink USB-C support?

Alex Pixel

Get away with what? A more than fair price? lol. The entire console costs around the same price as just an equivalent GPU and the improvements are far greater in person… and these aren’t even games built with the pro in mind. Also Xbox released the 2TB Series X 3.5 weeks ago for only $100 less. That definitely dictated the price. And releasing without a massive game is the best thing that could have happened. If it launched with GTA6, not a single person would go back and play older enhanced titles. But the improvements to BG3(patch released yesterday) FF7 rebirth, Horizon, SM2, GoW:R …it’s like playing a brand new games

Now that AMD has refined its V-cache implementation for gaming to minimize the hit to clocks and thermals, is there a possibility that we'll see V-cache come to consoles and/or handhelds.

As we know RDNA 4 will last for about a year, if not less. (Since it's releasing in January 2025, and we're expecting RDNA 5 either Q4 2025 or Q1 2026), will AMD keep RDNA 4 on in the low end for a long time to come, and use the newer generations to focus on the cards above that, like Polaris was, since Polaris wasn't really gone from shelves until 2022; and lasted 6 years for the low end.

Is Nvidia's ARM CPU looking like it'll be on 2nm then, as 2nm is also going to be consumer ready in Late 2025. If so, that would explain why they think they could overtake AMD in GPU, because; if they say they're aiming for 120mm^2 or so on the GPU, they can probably do that with a dieshrunk GB205 (without the memory die, because that'll be on the CPU); and would also likely allow for much lower TDP and/or greater performance.

As Nvidia is competing with Strix Halo, however pre-fabbed ARM cores tend to be a little weaker than X86 at the moment, are we expecting Nvidia to do more Cores than AMD will have in Strix Halo (IE: 14 Cortex X935s + 6 Cortex A725s for example)

TechnoLadz

Is Nvidia using a ready made ARM Core (Cortex X935 (I presume since they're aiming for late 2025, and the X925 is for Early 2025) etc), or do they have an ARM Design license and will be using custom cores like Apple is?

Why are high refresh rate (240Hz+) LED monitors with 1440P and 4K neglected compared to OLED equivalents? With doing productivity regularly and static elements always, OLED is a bad choice for me, and anyone else in a similar position.

How likely will we be getting the Fable games (Fable Anniversary, Fable II, and Fable III from the XBox 360 available to play on the XBox Series X) available on other consoles without the expensive GamePass subscription? That's the only reason I still use and buy XBox (currently using the XBox Series X). If they were available to purchase on PC (without Steam) or on Switch/Switch 2, I'd happily play them there, but GamePass is useless to me since I almost never play a new game available with it and it's much cheaper just to buy the games since I replay them numerous times.

Are you aware of AMD's plans for chiplet design for the compute dies in GPUs, and are they going to stay monolithic? That was the promise of RDNA 3, the MCDs, and it didn't turn out. AMD also had issues with chiplets in Zen as compared to Intel's monolithic approach, but eventually with each successive generation, they improved the architecture so much so that they started competing with Intel for both consumer and server space. Perhaps the same could happen with their GPUs. As both of you are very knowledgeable in this space, what are you thoughts?

Hugo Ander Kivi

Greetings gang and thanks for coming back NXG. I’d love to hear ya’lls thoughts on noticeable differences on 4k120 oleds? For the base model, the upscaling artifacts were often pretty noticeable. Also, with hands on, were there any pleasant surprises? Lastly, in your eyes, is this a “pro” console? Everyone has a different value of money, but is the upgrade meaningful ending to merit market segmentation akin to the iPhone? Cheers guys and just a helpful tip for the audience: I heard from around that the seal sticker on the release models is apparently super thin, and if it breaks retailers have to sell them as open box for 25% off.

Intel is claiming software in general and windows in particular is holding Arrow Lake back. Lets believe them, how much performance do you think can realistically be gained through software? Enough to make them worth considering?

Lucas

Do you think that generative AI (eg an LLM to make NPC dialog more realistic) is on its way. If so how soon until the first AI games will hit store shelves. And what do you think this will do to the VRAM demands games place on GPUs. Will AI enabled games dramatically decrease the useful lifespan of a 16GB card?

Michael Mullin

Is there anything Intel can do short term to stop the bleeding? The new cpus aren’t selling well, would selling them at a loss help to at least retain marketshare or should they just call it this gen and push for a new generation sooner rather than later?

Sad XTX 999

I have no doubts DLSS 4 will be great. But do you think nvidia’s mindshare can last another 2 years of poor value in the midrange? With fsr 3 and PlayStations “PISS”R being good how much longer do you think people will be ok with buying 8 and 12gb graphics cards regardless of how good the software is, and with the alleged near 4080 performance level 8800xt with hopefully a fsr4 that has improvements found in PISS-R and FSR3 is it possible AMD has a chance this generation to get marketshare?

Sad XTX 999

PS5 Pro seems to be a much smoother/consistent game improvement than the PS4 Pro but do you guys think PS4 Pro was/is seen as a bigger upgrade because of the transition to 4K mid gen?

CompressedAIBlocks

Why can't PSSR run on the base PS5 ? If a better upscale solution exists then the ps5 pro would be irrelevant for now

Cypto_AI_TechBro_Scam

Now that you’ve had time with the ps5, do you think the market will accept the price increase? Is it worth it? In my opinion if it launched with big games like GTA 6 or a bloodborne remake/remaster. The pill would have been easier to swallow for more people.

Sad XTX 999

Hello Tom and Michael, hope you are both well. I don’t see why many should go to Zen 5 as a whole with the way things are now. Unless of course you wish to rid yourself of the problems of Zen4. Would you recommend that people wait for Zen 6? And do you have any information on how powerful Zen 6 will be compared to Zen 5?
