It's fascinating to see you bring up the quality of media reporting around opinions vs facts and the limited --vetted-- fact based reporting. It's challenging to find quality in media broadly. You need to know where to go, and a lot of people seem to have a challenge discerning what's based on fact when opinion is presented as facts. I'd been attributing a lot of our break downs related to people getting quality information. It 's linked to parallel views of reality, echo chambers, and distorted views.
This is great. I had no idea you covered topics like this, generally. Great conversation.

Tech Techs an idiot! he lost me years ago when he wouldn't buy Radeon even though price to performance was king. The world would be better if people were more cynical to media and especially politicians. Stop trying to blame things on wether they are blue or red. You are not who you follow or who you buy things from.

100% with dan on this, there is no evidence that passes muster on the topic of DEI being at fault for anything at all at intel. It is almost exclusivly used as a dogwhistle

As a non-American it all seems a bit of a storm in a teacup and a bit symptomatic of the "politicisation of everything" in American life. But I appreciate today's video - a good overview and a rational take. Thanks both!

Kudos Tom and Dan for threading the needle on this topic. I appreciate the rational and evidence-based discussion. Proud to be a supporter.

I've looked into the DEI stuff before. It's literally just the corporate way of virtue signaling. Is it annoying? Sure! But these people act like it's an existential threat to "meritocracy" and some just use it as a way to bash on minorities.
Tom pushing back on it was good enough for me but I do respect you guys putting in the effort to do a dedicated show on it for Patrons.

Agree to disagree. His arguments sucked and your response was irrelevant and emotional. Oh, and let's not pretend the YouTube comments section is suddenly filled with intelligent comentary.
Keep up the good work though. Glad to see there is a real market in tech journalism, other than more benchmarks and access media reading off press releases and pretending its news.

I think it's concluded by both of you in the video that toothless political stuff like what TYC said needs to be cut from future videos. It annoyed a large amount of viewers and it annoyed you guys as well because the majority of viewer engagement focused on that one piece instead any other of the great parts of the episode.
Cutting content out because it gets political or opinionated is a slippery slope, you can look at traditional media for plenty of examples of why people trust them less and less. But if a guest wantonly states something as fact without providing proof then it's probably better left on the cutting room floor. You tried to keep the conversation moving and I think, in the moment, that's the best thing you can do.
Geopolitics is inevitably going to enter the conversation now and again when talking about semiconductors. I think if both parties are mature and educated well enough to have a proper conversation, then it can be really entertaining or thought-provoking stuff and *shouldn't be cut*. Thought-provoking discussion is a big part of why I listen.

If that infuriates you - maybe think about your own bias a bit. There was nothing emotional about what I said, and yet it seems you feel the need to try and throw out a word that suggests I am illogical for speaking the way I did. Is it really that hard to consider that maybe I actually did logically think out that response, and other logical people agreed with me?
If that is hard for you - then you might actually be the one whose "emotional" about this subject...
Anyways, be well. Next episode is another normal one haha, and I am sure that will make you happy.

Which is the point we conclude btw - just saying "DEI" is "toothless" - be specific.

I was in disagreement with Bryan when he brought up DEI. I think he has the right to his opinion, even though I don't share it.
In my company, there are DEI initiatives, and in most cases the training is to be more respectful of people with different cultures than yourself. This is something that is a good idea, imo. I'm not perfect at doing that, but it's at least better to strive to do that, than dismiss a coworker because they're different.

Exactly.
Now, that being said, I did find what TYC said during Broken Silicon to be a bit out of place and rather toothless. He said it with authority but without really backing it up. If you're going to say something like that, which you know will ruffle a lot of feathers, you need to be able to provide proof or an example. If I'm remembering correctly, he did not. So people just got upset and took to the comment section.

Random thoughts on this 'cast: Based on your research, it looks like TSMC is the one suffering from DEI: having to hire underqualified Americans into their fab jobs rather than just bring over their qualified (and workaholic) engineers from Taiwan. So if anyone is getting boned by DEI, it's TSMC, not Intel.
Intel fiefdoms: you mean like Raja's fiefdom in graphics until the whole thing blew up? The flip side is that in a shrinking companies like Intel, fiefdoms are how middle managers (try to) protect their teams from HR cutting people based on cost rather than importance to the team.

Ultimately, DEI is just a modern, socially-acceptable form of Racism. But don’t worry, it’s okay *this time* because Asian & White Males are the ones mostly being discriminated against.

The thing that got me about TYC's statements about DEI is that he drew a false equivalence between DEI and affirmative action/preferential hiring. In real life DEI is more than just hiring practices. Stuff like pronouns, respecting people's culture and just "live and let live" are also part of DEI.

Should you avoid talking about politics? For the love of God yes. Both of you are terrible at it and I watch you're channel to get away from that stuff. Just edit it out next time, I was irritated that the guest brought it up, and infuriated that people thought Tom's response was anything other than an emotional response to quickly change the subject.
