Discussing Arrow Lake, Zen 5, and next gen GPUs w/ Tech YES City

The next episode of Broken Silicon will see the return of Bryan from Tech YES City. Bryan has recently done reviews for Arrow Lake, put out extensive testing of Raptor Lake instability issues, and has A LOT to say about Zen 5 and upcoming GPU generations.

As often happens - this guest can be asked anything about anything! Just be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submissions considered.

Are alder lake and zen 3 enough performance? I’m starting to get burnt out by techtuber reviews recommending CPU “upgrades” every 12 to 18 months.

What could be the next big thing for cpus? I understand why people are upset about the poor performance from recent launches but at the same time I wonder why? Even a 5600x (in my opinion) is more than enough for 144hz in most titles, so what is this “I need more” sentiment out there? I have a 5800x3d on a 170hz monitor at 1440p I genuinely can’t see what more there is for AMD and Intel do do to spice it up, is it the games that need to catch up or am I out of touch and there definitely is something both can do but they are both too greedy/lazy to try.

Hey Tom & Bryan, Bryan, do you tend to find better deals on older Nvidia graphics cards or older AMD graphics cards? Also, with AMD's market share increasing, how do you think the secondhand market will look for both AMD and Nvidia in the future?

General computing / optimization question with context: Me and the boys are playing Morrowind multiplayer with mods, but one thing we noticed is that even though all of the hardware should be more than enough to render the game dozens of times over, we are noticing that the game is having trouble doing things at max settings, sometimes going into the lowest settings. My question is how long does it normally take for newer hardware to stop playing older games? Most benchmarks are only concerned with new or newish titles, but not about the stability or experience of older titles, and tbh it makes me kinda sad. Thoughts?

When testing gaming benchmarks at 1080p on the fastest CPUs, how CPU limited are they in practice? Is this something you can quantify? Might we see bigger gaps between CPUs when the 5090 comes out?

Chris Rijk

How much would you guys predict the 9950X3D's all core scientific compute performance uplift be compared to the 9950X, specifically when it comes to AVX-512? And how much all core clocks are to be expected from both of them?

Allen Chen

What do you think of the state of PC gaming in Japan? I’ve read articles saying that it has grown tremendously, and steam statistics says that Japanese is among the fastest growing language in the platform. Also, how dead is XBOX in Japan?

MultiNati

Would it be fair to say that ARL is equivalent to Intel playing music on the deck of the Titanic as it sunk?

PCDog

How long do you think it will take for Intel to come out with a gaming CPU that’s faster than Raptor Lake refresh? Do you think it is at all realistic for Panther Lake to solve all the problems with Arrow Lake? PS There's some rumours this like doing the rounds: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/intel-panther-lake-will-allegedly-reintegrate-the-memory-controller-into-the-compute-tile-nova-lake-is-expected-to-separate-the-two-again-with-added-optimizations

Chris Rijk

A year from now, do you expect the gaming performance of Arrow Lake to have changed much at all? Are you aware of any fixes or improvements that should improve gaming performance significantly?

Chris Rijk

How would you rate this year so far for gaming CPUs? Do you expect the 9800X3D to change that? Would you be excited if it’s as overclockable as the 9700X?

Chris Rijk

Hello Tom and Bryan, What is the best outcome for Intel in this circumstance after disappointing Arrow Lake release. As DerBauer showed Arrow Lake can be much more efficient when the Voltage regulator is not active. Was Intel so affraid of killing its CPUs that they gave the crown for efficiency away. It was also shown that overclocking the ring-Bus would hold a real performance improvement.

AI-Soldier789

Hello Tom and Bryan. We've seen motherboard pricing skyrocket over the past few years. Supposedly for the sake of better features and reliability. Question for Bryan: Have you seen any link between more expensive motherboards and higher survival rates on the used market over the years? Or have the cheap boards been faring just fine?

TwistedRancor

Bryan - How many custom builds do you do a year? Also given how strong CPUs are relative to GPUs, ignoring price is Arrow Lake good enough for most people or far too buggy to recommend? I'm still using an 3900X with a 7900XTX as it really only seemed worth while to upgrade the GPU a year ago. Since I'm not a competitive gamer a few extra frames is hardly worth a CPU upgrade until my system seems slow. Would you agree?

Kiln God

Hey Tom and Bryan. Given the hole Intel has dug themselves into, what would it take for them to swing the opinion on Arrow Lake to at least "it's fine" by the time they announce their next line of CPUs?

Cleansweep

Intel has had a strong presence with system integrators for a long time. But after the massive 13th and 14th Gen return rates and Arrow Lake being a dud, could this result in system integrators fleeing Intel in mass? Resulting in the collapse of their client revenue?

Jamwap

Hello Brian, even with the supposed “fixes” to “Alderlake+++++”. As a channel that searches for deals and best possible budget builds, I’m sure in the near future there will be a plethora of discounted higher end raptor lake used and new available. Will you be ignoring them like the plague since you won’t know the condition of them, or will you have certain guidelines that will need to be followed to consider one?

Welcome Bryan and greetings Tom, This is a forward-thinking question focused on possible US tariffs affecting PC components. If someone is planning to buy a new PC within 14 months, do you suggest they buy this holiday or wait until late next year? Please assume this is a hobby build for gaming and not for work.

Hey Tom, and Bryan. I never planned on getting Arrow Lake but seeing how much of a disastrous launch it turned out to be, I just wonder why Intel can't just wait a few weeks to a month to launch it especially after how AMD had it own self-own not saying Arrow Lake would be Zen 53D but it could have atleast fixed the instability issues. Even if there were investors pushing for an earlier launch it's better to have a Zen 1 moment than a piledriver moment. Also what is with these companies releasing half baked products is it really that hard to wait one month to release something?

Kinihun25

Hi Tom and Bryan, is there any chance that the Zen 5 launch was pushed out early just so that they could do a Zen 5+ later with optimal stability and truly optimized performance, to make the plus generation look significantly better?

AnotherChris

Hey you two, Since foveros came out every product i know of that has used it fell behind expectations. Is there any insight to the performance impact of it?

Bangforbuck

Hi Tom and Bryan. Since Intel gave up Gaming do you think Arrow Lake will provide better results in the server segment. It seems from what I've seen so far better in some workstation workloads which could translate maybe well for big business like AI applications. Or will it suck in everything and AMD will gain even more market share in the x86 server segment. Greetings from Germany

chippi

Hello Tom and Bryan. Zen5 launch came with bunch of issues and problems but most of them were rectified and actually meaningfully helped the performance even for older CPU's. What do you think about Arrrow's lake launch? Can Intel somehow recover from this? From what I remember arrow lake was supposed to be a pretty big leap but now it looks really bad.
