Reader Mail for August Loose Ends

You know the drill! Tomorrow Tom will be doing the monthly livestream! As a reminder we have watched the following developments occur over the past 5 weeks:

...AND - you can expect some new Zen 5 leaks out of this channel too! You have ~16 hours to submit below!  Be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submission considered.

When are the loose ends going to hit the RSS feed?

Erik-Anders Nielsen

I saw an article about it. GameStop, for one, will be doing so.

Hugo Ander Kivi

Unless they can't execute on a full product stack. Botching a whole lineup is worse than successfully launching half a lineup

Responding in case Tom doesn't. I think many already do focus on 1% lows quite a lot if there's a story there. Unless the 1% lows are unusually low compared to competing products then the average framerate is a more relevant number since it represents the experience *most* of the time. Most reviewers (at least the ones I watch) always mention 1% lows if they are relevant.

Deadeyes

Are there retailers offering this? Or are you speculating? I would guess they couldn't offer that much because it would give them terrible margin trying to resell a used or refurbished PS5. Probably more like $250 or $300 depending on model I would think.

Tom what will the difference be between the RDNA 3.5 and 4?

Kiln God

Tom - Any idea when AMD might release 9800G or 9000G processors?

Kiln God

Hi Tom, Do you think PS5PRO in November mean less wafers for RDNA4

Hififorlife

Million dollar question Tom, we know how much you enjoy gaming on your ps5, will you be upgrading to a ps5 pro or not, no judgement either way :)

Alex Smith

Could MI300 game? How would it stack up to the 4090 or mythical 5090?

MoonshineOctopus

Tom - your recent admission that you knew about Apple’s M1 Ultra fusion connection of two M1 Max chips 6 months before release piqued my interest. Have you heard anything about the rumoured ‘extreme’ chips fusing 4x Max chips based on Apple patents? Are AMD exploring this type of chip connection at all? Either for cpu or gpu packaging? Or am I misunderstanding that this is what they are essentially doing already in their MI300 range, etc? What is RDNA5?…

MoonshineOctopus

How much vram do you think top rdna4 will get? They could probably get away with 16gb but 20-24 could send a real message. Or maybe drop a higher vram model later on like the 290x 8gb back in the day.

Lucas

When are we going to see DDR5 with the new 32 Gigabit chips? So we can have 2x32 GB single rank and 2x64 dual rank.

$700 is a hard pill to swallow for the PS5 Pro, and I think Sony with such pricing is entering the territory of custom PC builds, which although won't be as powerful for the price, they will be more versatile as you can do more on PC than just game. Do you also think it's starting to compete with PC in terms of cost? In Europe, it will be even more expensive, around €800–900, which I find ridiculous. I heard you saying they're testing the waters for the PS6, but this move is egregious compared to the last gen's pro. What would be an apt pricing for the Pro from your point of view?

Hugo Ander Kivi

Regarding the PS5 Pro, do you see value in some retailers offering in-store credit to customers by trading in their existing PS5 for about $350–400, depending on if it's the disc or discless version, and buying a PS5 Pro for the equivalent amount? This would, in my view, up the value of the PS5 Pro as you can get it much cheaper. Would you consider trading yours in to get the Pro cheaper?

Hi Tom, With recent windows issues been as bad as it has been, do you see more boutique retailers such as MinisForum put more focus into Linux support? I expect mainstream OEMs to stay on Windows no matter what since that was most people use, even in professional settings according to the lastest Stack overflow developer survey. But people that are going for this boutique retailers are more likely to be willing to experiment with Linux if it offers a better experience which is start to seem real.

Hey Tom, unlike many people who lament AMD’s decision to only release mid-range cards for RDNA4, I find the possibility of close to 4080/7900 XTX performance in the $500 price range to be incredibly attractive for me who has a 6800 XT. Do you have any information about its die size and compute/AI performance? Also, with PS5 Pro officially announced with PSSR just like you leaked, will AMD reveal a new version of FSR around RDNA4 launch?

MultiNati

What are our chances that Zen 5 X3D will have cross-CCX v-cache? Is that even on the horizon? I feel like that would solve their CCX latency issues and would almost explain why the cross-CCX latency got worse in Zen 5

Ketafuki

With the not so well received launch of Zen 5, do you think it'll be more likely for us to see the 8 (X3D cores) + 16(c cores) variant?

Dave Scholze

Hello Tom, hope you and your brother are well. It seems as though this year will be a train wreck in terms of GPU prices. My friend has been asking what he should purchase for a GPU, he currently still runs a 1080 ti. He wanted a 5090 but that seems to be $2,500, which I told him he probably shouldn’t throw that kind of money around when there could be better cards, better priced later down the line. Would it be better to just purchase a 6800 AMD card until the 6090 and top RDNA 5 card come out? I believe they would be more mindful of prices with the two competing. What are your thoughts?

Today's (9/11) news has been Intel Chips Act money being delayed by officials at the Department of Commerce. It is an election year, so each side may be hesitant to prop up a failing business. As opposed to Boeing, who has long been propped up. Is the US government now more inclined to support any entity operating on American soil over any American owned entity operating on multiple soils and is unstable?

Ivalenz

If raptor lake was an audible, what was the original plan for an alder lake successor on LGA 1700?

shea

should gaming cpu reviewers focus on 1% lows instead of averages now?

shea

Where do you think the PS5 Pro will sit in comparison to the RDNA4 launch lineup? We know the base PS5 is basically identical in performance to an RX 6700, so where do you think this'll sit, assuming the highest-end RDNA4 GPU will be called the 8800XT?

Question Generated By JensenGPT

Howdy Tom, What will you do differently about future architecture predictions with AMD's internal performance prediction woes and Intel losing any concept of an accurrate road map?

TMCPayton

You mentioned last episode that a steam box would be a crazy good move from valve, what performance would you dream it could reach?

AnotherChris

Thoughts on the official confirmation that Radeon is abandoning the enthusiast GPU market for the foreseeable future? As a 6900XT buyer at release, it's quite depressing. Was planning on an upgrade this year, and I might have my first Nvidia GPU in 6 years as a result. I personally don't see how retreating to the mid range and below will help Radeon's image/mindshare at all. I can't imagine I am the only person that shares this view. The way to beat Nvidia is to copy them with a full product stack (enthusiast to budget), but also price aggressively IMO.

gruntbanshee

Is 30 fps gaming finally dying? In the PS5 Pro launch it was mentioned that 75% of gamers use the performance mode rather than quality mode and as expected Sony decided to focus on frame rates rather than quality. Might the PS6 be 60 fps minimum?

Chris Rijk

Last BS Dan made an excellent point of everyone always talking about i9 performance but it really needs to be i7 that competes with AMDs best. Where do you see Arrow Lake i5 and i7 performance falling? Additionally, do you think the i5 parts will suffer the most from lack of HT in gaming due to potentially having to use E cores more often?

CompressedAIBlocks

Is the Zen 5 leak about the 9950X3D getting vcache on both chiplets? :)

CompressedAIBlocks

PS5 Pro price is high, there's no question about that. What do you think Sony could have done to make $700 USD more enticing? I feel software is where they're lacking in terms of PS5 titles that aren't cross generational and aren't remakes/remasters.

CompressedAIBlocks

Tom, it's been a wild news month. What is the biggest piece of news in your opinion? Mine would be Royal Core cancellation.

CompressedAIBlocks

Who is the PS5 Pro for at these prices?

Intel FanBoy

Hey Tom seeing Royal Core canceled really bummed me out. I have to admit the cpu market has be boring me as of late even if Zen 5 came out with 25% greater performance what does that really do for me allow me to game at 1080p at 800fps, or finish my renders slightly faster. Royal Core, from what you said felt like the next great step in CPU technology and to see Pat take it behind the barn is so frustrating. In my opinion this should be the final nail in the coffin for Pat's time as Intel's Ceo

Kinihun25

Tom do you see a scenario where Sony could drop the price of the PS5 Pro to something managable like $550 (especially since the $80 disc drive is sold separately). I was very excited for the PS5 Pro but at $780(disc drive added) I just can't spend that much on a console, and this is just a foreshadow to the inevitably future of a $800+ PS6.
