Discussing Intel Instability, PS5 Pro, Switch 2, Zen 5 w/ Matt of Alderon Games

Broken Silicon's next guest will be Matt from Alderon Games! He has been a vital critic of Intel's instability issues - paving the way towards the true by being fearless and openly stating his problems publically. Additionally, he's a veteran Game Developer with A LOT to say about upcoming consoles and hardware releases! At a minimum, we plan to discuss the following:

But of course we can talk about just about anything you want us too! Just be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible with your submissions below. You have ~24 hours to submit!

Take a look at what he says. Are these true? Is Intel going China? And how is that fair competition towards AMD? https://youtu.be/6d2CJrodL98?si=f9VxbBwTWroxAEoJ

Hi Tom and Matt. In previous BS like 2 yrs ago, a guest said that a lot of AMD optimisations has to be ditched when making PC port as NV doesn't support the features AMD offer, is it still the case now?

Why don’t you know how to properly use RTX Raytracing which just works and requires no work besides turning it on?

Jen-Hsun Huang

How easy is it to optimise for different CPU architectures compared to different GPU architectures from a developer perspective?

What kind of changes to the crash reporting systems and particularly the data gathering and cataloguing do you think are important to make based on the experiences with the unstable raptor lake parts?

How much are you looking forward to mega-APUs with unconstrained VRAM?

Hi Tom and Matt... Since the Intel problem has became boring to me, I shall ask about Qualcomm and WoA in general. Talking about your woes with the X Elite, I was wondering if your game as you previously have said to be able to ran on the MS devkit (Snap 8CX) (but not X Elite laptop), was it able to run on previous platform like the Snap 850 or Snap 835 devices? It does sounds like to me that there was little shared between each generation of WoA devices, and I don't see it as a good thing.

Hi Matt! in one of our previous conversations, you had implied that some team members are "forced to use" Radeon products as part of the testing phase for game builds. I am kinda curious as to why you put it that way. My personal understanding is that most products from RDNA 2 and newer, they far less of a headache to deal with compared to previous generations of Radeon. How true is that and what implications does it have for AMD and the hardware/software tools they are trying to make available for devs? [e. g. GPU Detective, Ray Tracing Analyzer and Frame Latency Meter.]

Hello Matt and Tom. It's often mentioned in the tech space that Intel's P-cores (Golden Cove/Raptor Cove) take up a large amount of die space for a core. What about them makes them a decent amount larger? Is there a few areas that just have more logic setup? Is a certain part "beefier" than the equivalent in a Zen 4 core? Thanks.

As a developer, what do you think of godot as an engine vs UE5? Likes vs dislikes? I have been toying with the idea of trying to build a game and I'm still working on the story so picking an engine to build it with is not my absolute first priority.

Hey Tom and Matt. Was the adoption of people using Ray Tracing quicker or slower than you had anticipated?

What are the chances the current intel issued is what delayed sapphire rapids?

Hi Matt, based on what you currently know about it, do you think Sony made the right hardware tradeoffs for the PS5 Pro?

Chris Rijk

First of all, thanks for all you've added bringing the Intel issues to light. It still pains me there are people online with their head in the sand still buying Intel laptops but their loss. As a game developer, what hardware excites you to develop for? Do you prefer the Nvidia approach of "no more vram for the masses" or the strix Halo approach of "all the vram you could ever need but weaker in raster & ray tracing"?

Hi Matt, based on your experience so far with the Snapdragon X Elite, what do Qualcomm need to do to make it a viable option for game developers and gamers? If Nvidia entered the Windows market with an ARM and GeForce based APU, do you think that would solve all the gaming issues and do you think Qualcomm could compete with them?

Chris Rijk

Hi Matt, I was searching for Raptor Lake based servers earlier today and it took me a long time to find any, yet Ryzen based servers were easy to find as were servers based on the EPYC 4004 series even though they were announced just 2 months ago. Let’s say Intel’s microcode fix stops all degradation - would you expect that to win server customers back quickly or do you think Intel has lost this entire market for now?

Chris Rijk

Hi Matt, in the crash reporting tools for your games, have you seen unusually high error rates from players with 13900HX or 14900HX laptops? For your Raptor Lake servers, have you used any workloads other than game servers and if so did you see a similar pattern of degradation and errors? Do you know of anyone who has used Raptor Lake in servers and NOT had similar issues?

Chris Rijk

Hi Matt, how important do you consider developer productivity to be and how does it affect the software features you use and what hardware you buy for developers? It probably won’t happen any time soon due to the AI craze, but let’s say that AMD made a variant of their MI300A “datacenter APU” that was instead targeted at workstations for game developers - would you be prepared to pay $20,000 for a super high-end workstation? Would a Strix Halo laptop with 128GB of unified memory be useful for games developers?

Chris Rijk

I never understood why Intel had so many issues with drivers for legacy games. They have a long history of integrated graphics on their CPUs, and I would have thought that those drivers, and the experience behind their maintenance would have carried over in some way. Was there a reason they didn't carry that legacy support of those drivers over to their dedicated cards?

Given that zen 5 ipc improvement was “only” 16 percent. It’s clear that amd went for an efficiency win as well as optimization of the die size (zen 5 being a smaller core). Do you think zen 6 will be reduced smaller to get rid of compact cores? Or potentially up the core count finally across the board ? How big of a potential ipc increase do they expect with zen 6 offering up a potential io die and layout? Don’t see intel keeping pace with only potentially offering up ipc improvements of single digits being enough while Amd is winning on ipc and further reducing tdp this generation.

What do you think of Intel extending warranty on BOXED Raptor Lake chips? Specifically only on retail, box units. Sucks to buy in trays or off OEMs, huh?

KarbinCry

Given how long Nintendo has stretched out the life of the Switch, what would make your Must Haves, Should Haves, and Could Haves list of features (hardware/software/development) for the Switch 2 if Nintendo planned to have it match or exceed the Switch 1's lifespan?

Cleansweep

What do you think about ReadyCode (https://www.readycode.io/) and their efforts to make a modding API/SDK with broad engine support?

Cleansweep

When we told people it was Intel’s fault why didn’t the bandwagon start there?

Jen-Hsun Huang

Hi Tom and ʇʇɐW :) Matt, obviously you've been very outspoken about the whole Intel situation at the moment, assuming that AMD doesn't do anything Intel stupid, what would be the path in the future for you to return to using Intel processors or has the bridge been burned.

Alex Smith

It's been mentioned and a point to be made (as opposed to other CPU releases) that the manifestation of Zen 5's true performance will only come about over time as programs are updated to take advantage of it. However, will these architectural improvements ever become relevant in the context of a game? If you optimize for Zen 5, you put games at risk of performing worse on other core designs. Outside of HPC, are these theoretical improvements going to go anywhere?
